The week went by fast. I avoided Draco and he seemed to avoid me and Delia and I got to hang out a lot more.
"Did you guys hear? Sirius Black escaped and he's coming here for Harry!" a kid ran down the hallway holding a copy of the Daily Prophet.
Delia looked at me, her face white with horror.
"Who is Sirius Black?" I asked.
"He's a lowlife murderer who was rotting away in Azkaban."
"And why is he coming after Harry?" she shook her head.
"I forget you grew up in the Muggle world." we started walking to the dorms, students walking hurriedly to their common rooms. She told me the story of Voldemort and the death eaters. Of everything that had happened and how Harry had single handedly destroyed the strongest wizard in history and he'd only been a baby. We walked up to the dorms and sat on my bed.
"And people are still trying to kill him?" I asked, my heart sinking at the thought of someone killing Harry.
"You know who's followers are crazy. That's why they've been locked up in Azkaban. Well, most of them anyway." she shrugged.
"Most of them?" my heart sunk further.
"Some said they were reformed or whatever. Like Snape. Everyone knows he's a Deatheater." somehow I was surprised. Even though Snape was mean and hateful, I couldn't imagine anyone working for anyone so evil. "And the Malfoys." I felt the color drain from my face. "Lucius is and I'm pretty sure Dracos on his way to following in his dads footsteps."
"Lights out girls!" McGonagall announced. We sighed and parted, Delia going to her own bed.
Draco was a Deatheater. Well, could be. Could he? No. Could he?
I stared at the ceiling, my mind racing with thoughts of Voldemort and Harry.

I couldn't sleep. I tried everything, but my mind wouldn't shut off so I decided to take a walk. I snuck out of the dorms and out the portrait hole, tip toeing my way around the castle. I kept as quiet as I could, knowing Filtch could catch me at any minute and I could be expelled. The cold night air felt refreshing on my skin as I turned another corner.

Suddenly something clasped over my mouth and I was pulled into a broom closet. My heart was caught in my throat, keeping me from screaming and making it hard to breathe. I looked up at my attacker, who held a finger to his lips, trying to keep me quiet. I stopped struggling as soon as I saw those gray eyes, a hint of worry in them. He kept his hand over my mouth as we stood there, listening to the world outside.

There were footsteps outside, but none that sounded human. More like an animal, with claws. Whatever it was passed and Draco let me go, both of us breathing heavily.

"What are you doing out here?!" He whisper-yelled.

"I was taking a walk." I whispered back.

"Do you even know what could have happened if-" He stopped, shaking his head. "You really shouldn't be out at night."

"I can take care of myself, thank you and I could ask you the same question." I raised an eyebrow at him.

"None of your business." he paused. "Please just promise me you won't be out at night anymore, especially now." his eyes were almost pleading.

"Fine." It was weird hearing him say please and actually act like he cared. Suddenly a blood curdling scream rang through the entire castle, shaking me to my bones. I jumped and grabbed on to Draco. “What was that?” I asked, my heart pounding in my chest.

“I don’t know.” I listened for something, but all I could hear was my heart beating in my ears. “Your heart is beating so fast.” He said, breaking the silence. I looked up at him, realizing how close our bodies were.

“Sorry.” I apologized, taking a step back. There was running outside the door. It sounded like the whole school was out of their rooms and running in the direction of the Gryfindor common room. “What’s going on?” I whispered, trying to peak through a crack in the door.

“Stay here.” He looked back at me, reaching for the doorknob.

“Where are you going?” I asked, not wanting to be left alone in the dark.

“To see what’s happening. I’ll come back.” With that he left, closing the door behind him.

I could feel the darkness creeping around me. It felt like a thick blanket surrounding me and holding me down. It got harder to breathe and before I knew it my heart was pounding from lack of oxygen. I forgot how afraid of the dark I was. But this wasn’t just any dark; there was something going on in the castle and now I was trapped in a dark closet alone and without the promise of Draco’s return.

It felt like years before I heard footsteps passing before I heard footsteps passing by again and the students returning to their beds. Silence fell over the castle again and I waited in the dark, holding my breath. Suddenly the door opened and I smiled up at Draco who looked worried.

“Come on.” I followed him out of the dark and through the castle. He led me back up the stairs and to the entrance of the common room.

“What’s wrong?” I asked getting worried.

“There was an attack. You have to go in now.” He pointed to the entrance.

“What about you?” I asked.

“I’ll be fine.” I stared at him then turned away, whispering the password and leaving him standing on the stairs. I hoped he really would be okay.

“Where have you been?!” Delia asked, her face pale.

“I was outside. What happened?”

“The portrait of the fat lady was attacked. She got away, but Sirius Black was inside the castle.” She gulped.

“Sirius Black?” I felt light headed. I left Draco alone and Sirius was somewhere in the castle.

“Quendie, are you okay?” she asked.

“Yeah, I’m just really tired. Goodnight Delia.” I laid down as she said goodnight. I felt sick and I knew I wasn’t going to get much sleep that night.

I sat in potions, waiting for any sign that Draco was okay. I couldn’t help but shake my foot as Snape read off the ingredients for the potion we were learning.

Wait, I thought to myself, why am I so worried about him? I’m acting like a little girl with a crush. Was that what I was feeling? I knew there was something wrong. Every time he entered the room my heart skipped and I couldn’t help but be worried whenever he didn’t show up to class right away. Oh God. I do have a crush. And on Draco. Of all the people in the world why was it him?

I looked up as he entered the room, my heart skipping and butterflies fluttering in my stomach. Stop it Quendie I scolded myself. You can’t like him. Sure he’s genuinely sweet and cares and even maybe a little cute, but he’s Draco. The boy who made your first year of school a complete nightmare. The boy who you loathed only a few weeks ago.

This winter vacation couldn’t come soon enough.
