Reader's POV
"The reward I want... is your family.
Your family is most important to you... so I want your family."
they said.
"W-What? Does that mean you'll kill and eat my family?"
I asked.
"No. I can't kill you or your family, and I don't intend to. Don't worry. All of the children can live and go to the human world,"
it said.
"Then..."
"But you'll say goodbye to your family."
it added.
"Your past memories and future connections. Everything.
I'll take your family from your world. That's the reward. I'll grant your wish... But in return... you'll never see your family again."
I took a deep breath.
For them...
I took a deep breath, then smiled.
"Okay."
.
.
~Dream.~
I heard chuckling.
"I love youuu,"
the person sang.
What does that mean...?
I couldn't see their face.
They're... warm.
And happy.
Who?
They were drifting away.
My eyes widened.
"Come back! I don't- don't leave!
what does that mean? Who are you?"
I asked.
My heart sunk.
.
My eyes fluttered open, I had a massive headache.
"You awake? Where'd you come from? Why were you out there?"
a man... an old man asked.
I looked at him with wide and confused eyes.
Who is this...?
What is he talking about?
"I... I don't know."
realization dropped onto me.
"Why was I... Where did I... I can't remember,"
I told him.
"What's your name?"
he asked.
I stared at my feet with wide eyes, I didn't know.
"I... I don't know it."
"Where'd you come from?"
he asked.
I stayed silent, simply shaking my head.
"Your parents?"
parents?
I didn't say anything, I wanted to cry.
Why didn't I know?
"What were you doing out there, without a mask and wearing such light clothing?"
he asked.
I shook my head once more.
"I-I'm so sorry..."
"No need to apologize..."
he told me.
"Well, you're not hurt. I'm glad you're okay.
There are no villages nearby, and we don't have signal up here. I can't call for help until spring,"
he said.
"I can offer you food and a place to sleep. You might remember eventually. Don't rush, just rest,"
he said.
I nodded slightly.
"Th-... Thank you."
Then I looked around, my eyes went wide and I stumbled back out of the chair.
"What's wrong?"
he asked.
"What... what is that?!"
I exclaimed, pointing to the animal who was laying by the fireplace.
"Oh, dear... that's a cat. He was with you when I found you,"
he told me.
I hesitated, but I got near it.
"Nyaaaaa!"
it exclaimed, jumping at me.
It jumped onto my face, knocking me back. My hat fell off
The man started to laugh softly.
I chuckled and lifted him off of my face. Smiling at him, and somehow, I knew he was smiling back.
.
One Month Later
.
I had a different dream each night.
Different faces.
All warm.
And happy.
They were smiling, calling a name.
"Y/n."
Was that my name?
Who were they?
"Y/n!!"
the voice... the one that always calls out to me.
"I love you,"
they said with a smile.
Then... a woman, black hair pulled back, an apron.
"I love you, Y/n."
she had a soft voice... like a mom.
"We love you, musume,"
a man's voice, sad... and another man. But they were smiling.
"Y/n!"
a happy squeal.
"I lovee you, big sis!"
blond ponytails... a warm smile... bunny.
"We love you!"
more people. They were happy, smiling.
They were warm.
"Love you,"
a happy voice... black, pretty... pretty black hair and a warm smile.
"I'm in love with you,"
white hair, pretty eyes. Sad voice...
"I love you,"
a soft voice, purple long hair.
I don't know... who they are.
But they're so warm... and happy.
I don't want to leave.
It's ending.
No.
Let me stay...
I ended up waking up.
"No..."
I muttered, I flipped the pillow over, trying to sleep again.
Leslie purred softly, nuzzling close to me.
I soon started to drift.
Every night... I dream of us, every night.
Hopefully, I won't wake up this time.
,
,
"Have any of your memories returned?"
the man asked me.
I shook my head slightly.
"None at all..."
I muttered.
I took off the hat.
The hat wasn't mine, the word 'Nigei' on the side.
(No, not a typo, the L wore out.
It's supposed to say Nigel, since you have his hat.)
I sighed softly.
.
.
The same dream happened, nothing changed, but it still made me feel happy.
I woke up, beads of sweat running down my face.
I looked around, getting up.
I picked up a candle and walked down the stairs.
"Sir?"
I asked. he wasn't anywhere.
I looked out the window, he was outside.
I put my hat on and proper clothes for the outside, rushing to him.
Graves... many of them.
"They're my family. My family, my friends... my home.
I've lost them all. In a stupid war. I alone was left behind, alive."
he said.
"That must... it must really hurt. I'm sorry."
I said softly.
"Yeah it does. Although they're dead, they're still family. And this buried village is still my hometown. As long as I stay here and remember them, I can be with my family and friends."
he said.
I smiled softly.
"That's a wonderful way to put it,"
I said.
"I wish I could search for your family too. If they're alive, you'd want to see them, yes?"
he asked.
"I don't know. Since I don't remember anything. Even though I try.... the inside of my head is like this snow. Pure, white and blank.
But... when I look at the necklace and bracelet, I feel something.
The morning after I have that dream, I feel sadness. Even though I don't remember anything. And I can't remember the people. And I forget them once I wake... I feel warmth from them..."
I said softly.
I stared at all the graves, the crosses.
My heart sunk and tears brimmed in the corner of my eyes. I broke into sobs.
"I don't know... I don't know why, but it makes me want to cry,"
I sobbed. The man comforted me.
.
.
Somehow, I know clearly... that I probably won't remember anything,.
But I'm starting to think this is okay.
With my new name, my new self, I'll live today and seek out tomorrow!
The dreams have stopped.. but I've remembered the words... and the voices.
"Wow!"
I said in surprise as I looked around.
"Sir, there's so much people! And houses! And shops!
I exclaimed, then gasped.
"There's... chicken nuggets!"
I said with excitement.
He chuckled softly then caught up with me.
"Don't get lost... as soon as we finish shopping, we'll go home. Or they'll be no more trains back,"
He said.
"Okay!"
I said with a smile.
I soon raced away with excitement, to the chicken nuggets.
