Wei Wuxian had always had his own set of rules. He was the infamous head disciple of Yunmeng Jiang, a warrior who had promised himself that he was going to lead a life without any regrets.

The teen was known for his moonlit eyes which twinkled brighter than stars, which he had inherited from his mother. His infectious smile which left even the coldest people melting into a puddle. And, his face so perfect that one would think he was crafted by the god's themselves. Wei Ying was one of gods flawless creation. And, there was no doubting it.

He captured everybody's heart and left no one behind. To some Wei Ying was like the sun, always shining in all its glory with no dull side of its own.

Wei Ying was like a warm hug on a cold day. Atleast, it was how people remembered him.

Present,

"Wei Wuxian was dropped down the burial mounds!", The man finally gave in to the days of torture that he was exposed to, he blurted it out as soon as the disciple was ordered to kill him.

Hearing him say those words made Lan Wangji feel sick to his stomach. As if life was playing a pathetic joke on him, he felt his world come crashing down. Wei Ying, his soulmate had been thrown into the burial mounds. He was pushed into the unforgiving grounds of the burial mounds.

As soon as the truth came out he started hearing the murmurs of people at a distant. They had made sure to stay away from him as they whispered amongst themselves about the great tragedy that had occured.

' There's no way that Wei Wuxian would have survived the fall.', one of them whispered. Them speaking behind his back did nothing to make things better for him, it only elevated his anger tenfold. It wasn't for them to deem if his soulmate was dead or not. Wei Wuxian wasn't their saviour nor the man who was going to be the bane of their existence. He was simply someone who had been caught in a crossfire between a war of several sects. He was only trying to protect innocent civilians of his clan.

He only did what he was the best at. He was willing to sacrifice his whole life to the people around him. He was paying a debt which did not exist or make any sense.

He did not understand why his existence bothered them so much to the point that they talked about him every second they found themselves far from the unforgiving eyes of Lan Wangji.

Looking at Suibian in one hand and Bichen on the other. Lan Wangji did what he wanted to at that very moment, he unsheathed Bichen and ran the sharp blade across the man's neck slitting his neck open, the man couldn't believe what had just happened. The shock was a little too much for him to handle, his eyes blew wide open and stared into Lan Wangji's golden eyes which had some sort of a sick satisfaction in them that only he could see as he took his last breaths.

And, with that everything was gone. The man in front of him fell sideways.

The man's death bought him no happiness. It did not make things any better. Lan Wangji was out for blood, and he was only going to stop when he got to kill Wen Chao for what he had done. He was going to make it slow and painful, perhaps even worse than what would feel like a death sentence. Because that's what he deserved. Wen Chao deserved a punishment worse than death.

Jiang Wanyin; who stood next to him looked understandably horrified. He could see his hands shaking and his eyes welling up almost instantly. He could not believe what had just happened, he hadn't seen his brother in three months. Of those three gruelling months he had done whatever it took in his power to find where his brother was. And, it had all gone vain. It was as if Wei Wuxian did not exist anymore. Of the three months that he tried to find Wei Ying's whereabouts everything had lead to a dead end. Wei Ying was completely off the map, as if he had never even existed before.

And, now the former disciple of the Wen, a dead man now had finally spit the truth out moments before Lan Wangji killed him with no remorse.

He felt sick when the blood that spewed out of the man's neck got collected underneath his boots. He deserved every bit of what had happened to him, the man that laid in front of him should have died a death ten times worse than this.

His mind felt foggy and the sudden lightheadedness did no justice to what he was going through right now. Wei Wuxian, his brother, was gone. Gone forever. The burial mounds killed him. And, he had no way to find out if he was still alive or not. The resentful energy that the burial mounds was known to be unforgiving, with it's hundreds and thousands corpses lying in its infertile soil unburied without any dignity that was offered to the dead in the living world.

He could not cope with it. His brother was one of them now. Chances of his brother being one the resentful ghosts if the burial mounds with no sanity of its own was higher than him being alive with his limbs intact.

"He's gone.", He whispered not being able to believe even a word of it. He had to face it, a part of him knew that. He had to face the facts soon enough, because they had a war to fight. And, the faster he accepted it, the better it would be for him.

"He isn't."

Lan Wangji was quick to answer. His quick loss of temper felt almost deluding because of all the days that he had been with him trying to look for Wei Wuxian the man had not spoken more than a sentence to him in a day. It was tragic how a loss could bring someone down to their worst. As for Lan Wangji, he may have been going through something worse than him even though he had known Wei Ying for only an year.

Their relationship was meant to be so much more than what it had turned out to be. If it weren't for his mother, if it weren't for the circumstances then he was sure that the both would have had enough time to profess the feelings that they had for eachother.

But, sadly that wasn't the case anymore. Lan Wangji had left Wei Ying after they were rescued. And, Wei Ying was gone as soon as Baoshan Sanren had blessed him with a new golden core.

"How do you even know that?", He asked, even though he knew that a bond between two soulmates was the strongest when they were far from eachother, it had been centuries since the last set of soulmates to exist had been killed. There wasn't much knowledge of as to how their bond worked.

For all he knew Wei Ying was probably still alive, inside the burial mounds; dying, taking his last breaths as he desparately looked for a way out- oh who was he even kidding. Wei Wuxian would have given into death as soon as he knew that he was going to die.

Lan Wangji did not answer his question, even though it had been an obvious one. Jiang Wanyin knew that he had pressed a nerve with his question. He was only being realistic. With his need to be realistic he had forgotten his humanity.

He did not bat him a look. He turned around and walked away. Lan Xichen had stood not long behind them, the man had decided to follow them when he found himself unable to let his brother go out on a task which was as risky as this. There were no promises of him making out alive out of this, and he could not bear the thought of letting him go alone. Not after their father had passes away, not after his soulmate had been lost for months with no whereabouts.

They found two prisoners after a few hours, to his cold horror it was two of the least expected people that they had found.

He knew for a fact that not all the Wen's were bad. The branch of Wen clan that Wen Ning and Wen Qing belonged to was made up of, old people, innocent civilians and kids. It would be wrong of them to kill and torture innocent people over the sins of the main branch.

As they see Wen Ning and Wen Qing being led outside, Lan Wangji knew for a fact that these people needed their protection at all costs.

The next day,

When, Wei Ying was finally found something about him did not make any sense. Perhaps it was because of his change in appearance, he wasn't in his usual black robes. There was something different yet so familiar with what he wore. His robes had a shade of red, something very familiar to the crimson liquid that pooled beneath his feet. There was a sickening aura around him that he couldn't put his finger on.

All he knew was that Wei Ying was back. Back sooner than he had expected him to, back before he was going to lose hopes. The doubt on the back of his head did not leave and he found himself growing troubled as the minutes passed.

Only Wei Ying was capable of something like this. Only he was the one who had made it out of the burial mounds alive and unscathed. He didn't think Wei Ying had returned unscathed. This wasn't the Wei Ying that he had last seen. This was someone else. Filled dull of resent and Yin.

Only appearance of the man he had seen in the past was still there; with a few changes enough for just anybody to notice. His hair wasn't tied up with his red ribbon any longer. The signature ribbon that was always tied around his hair was gone. He couldn't see his face so far, but he knew that it was him. Even Jiang Wanyin who was standing by his side knew that it was his brother. Because there was something so familiar yet they found themselves not being able to put their finger on it.

His long hair went way past his waist and there was something bold about the steps he took. As if he knew that he had the upper hand over this situation. Wen Chao on the side was cowering in fear, beaten black and blue looking like a bruised peach. He deserved every bit of what he had coming towards him. But, he couldn't see Wei Ying putting an end to his life. His soulmate couldn't be as ruthless as that to have Wen Chao brought down to a level that low to the point where he could only sob and beg for his life to be spared.

To see fear in Wen Zhuliu's unemotinal eyes for once did not make him feel any sorts of satisfaction. It made him feel dread. If this was what Wei Ying had done without his sword then there was so much more that he was capable of. And, the only way to do that would be-

"Why don't you pick a god and start praying?", Wei Ying asked with a smug look on his face. He looked proud of what he had done and Lan Wangji knew that even though he couldn't see his face yet. Wen Chao cowered away even when he heard Wei Ying's voice ringing throughout the room.

"After all you are going to meet your creator in a few minutes.", Wei Ying mocked walking closer to see how he reacted to that. And it was exactly what he wanted to see in his eyes, fear. Fear for his life. It was beautiful. Wei Ying loved every ounce of it. It was truly a beautiful feeling, the copious amounts of pleasure one could get out of the fear that someone had for them. A type of fear that made them wish for the quickest possible death ever.

He twirled the flute in his hands effortlessly and looked at Wen Zhuliu with a smirk. And, he knew what exactly he was going to do to him now.

That was when he saw it. Wei Ying turned around and he could finally see his face. Lan Wangji wasn't the type of a person to ever react much to things no matter how bad they were. But, this one; no matter how peculiar it was, it sent a shiver down his spine.

Wei Ying's were the deepest shade of crimson that he had ever seen. It was dark, darker than the blood that had pooled on the floor.

Resent.

Wei Ying was practicing demonic cultivation.
