“Sir, I request the supply be here by Monday and it’s Wednesday. I am the one that needs to report why we have a shortage of supply.” I was talking to the production manager. He had to ensure that the stock is always deliverer on time but it was his off weekend and it slipped his mind. Not only is Mr. Black going to kill me but we will be losing money. My department would have to work overtime to make up for the loss.
Scarlet came through the door. “Big Boss wants to talk to you.” I gave her a look. “Stock problem.”
Just great. Mr. Black hasn’t been in the office for the past two days and the one day he comes in, is the day my department is going down in flames because of something out of my control. “I understand, you have a higher position than mine. I’ll be seeing Mr. Black about the problem in a few minutes. Enjoy the day, sir.” I ended the call.
“Boss lady, it's bad,” Scarlet says. “Candice is in a bad mood. Big Boss is angry at the world.”
I sigh. “Just great.” I didn’t need this. If I lose my job, I swear, I will slap that idiot so hard his mother would have a hard time identifying him. “Tell my brothers I love them. And my sister, she can have my clothes.”
Scarlet laughed. “Come on, boss lady. The worst you could get is a sexual spanking.” Scarlet knew about the complication between me and our boss and she was all for team devil. She wanted me to grab it with both hands but I just couldn’t.
“Please.” I rolled my eyes. “Who needs kinky when you got the devil?” that got us both laughing. I grabbed my phone and we walked towards the elevator. “Do you plan on going to lunch?”
“Yep. I’m going to mail the contacts quickly and get the signatures then I’ll take my lunch, why do you want something?” She asked and I couldn't stop the smile from spending to my face.
She was more than my P.A. “Can you bring me something with? My wallet is in my bag. You know my code.” The door opened and I stepped in.
“Come on, baby, I got you.” She said with a smirk. “you can get the next one.”
“Thank you.” the doors closed.
I loved that girl. We had a nice understanding. She had been on this stock problem since Monday. We had more problems popping up these two days than we had in years. The group that had to deliver the feedback for the new foreign translating gadget came back inconclusive. So not only did we know if we should make more or cancel the product but our best selling phone and notepads weren’t delivered. Scarlet has been on track with everything and gave me a full summary of our situation. She was the best.
The top floor didn’t look as peaceful as it always was. People were up and down with papers and they looked angry as hell. Some were shouting and the one female had tears in her eyes. She probably lost her job and trust me losing this job is losing gold. I wasn’t earning six figures yet but the ones on this floor were and I pitied them if they lost their jobs.
“What the fuck happened?” Candice pulled me to her desk. “The weekend went well, what did you do?”
I look at her strangely. “What? He took me to work and left. After work, he picked me up and dropped me.” I was still confused. “Nothing happened, I didn’t do anything.”
The weekend ended well. We watched the movies and I even cuddled with Mr. Black. Candice and Hades relationship became better. He picked me up and dropped me off at home and nothing was wrong, he seemed normal.
“Hades also can’t give me an answer. Nothing is wrong with the other business.” Candice mumbled to herself. “Don’t tell...” she looked up and met my eyes. She pulled me closer to her. “Straight answer. Did you or did you not have Hades sleep at your place.”
“No, but he came for breakfast Monday morning and you know I go to Ms. Maggie for breakfast,” I said. “He joined me.”
“He dropped you at work.”
“Yes,” I answered. “I still didn’t have time to get my car. I took a cab home and went to get my car that same afternoon.” I can’t see myself doing anything wrong. Everything I did was correct.
“Oh my god!” Candice said oh so loudly that everyone stopped to look at us. She pulled me down the hallway to her brother’s office. “He thinks you going to fucking replace him with his brother,” Candice said. “You sort out this shit because the company is going through a hell of a time with its master being upset.”
“I didn’t do anything wrong.” I defended myself.
“Yeah, well, you kind of did.” with that, she opened the door and pushed me inside.
This wasn’t my first time in his office but every time I entered I felt like a learner entering the principles office. You feel the tension in this room. I don’t know but all of a sudden, I felt like apologizing for my mistakes. Mistakes and sins, I didn’t even know I committed. Mr. Black had a strange power, it made me want to bend down and worship the floor he walks on.
“Ms. Bell.” And my heart broke. I could hear the cracks in my heart spreading. He hasn’t called me that in a long time and it feels like I was betrayed by God, himself. I can’t believe the power Mr. Black has over me.
“I heard you were looking for me,
sir,” I said, hiding the pain and keeping my voice professional.
“What is happening with the stock and the products not being by the stores yet.” He asked and what hurt me was the fact that he didn’t look up from the computer like he couldn’t look at me like I was disgusting.
“It's out of my control, Sir,” I said, trying to sound normal as possible. “I had a notice put in before the time. I knew the stock was low and before it was requested I sent a notice. Product management made a mistake, Sir.”
The silence was deafening. “Is it not your responsibility to ensure product reach stores on time?” he still wasn’t looking at me
“Yes sir but I do not make the products. I only deliver and sir, with all due respect, if I don’t receive a product, how can I market it? How can I get clients to invest and buy the product?.” He finally looked up from his screen and he was pissed as hell. “Sir, Mr. Ross made it clear that he didn’t work during his off weekend. I have a recording of the call, sir.”
“Forward the recording to me.” I nodded. “Ms. Bell, take a seat. Our meeting is far from over.”
I couldn’t take this Ms. Bell story anymore. I wanted him to call me ‘princess’ or even rose, anything but the formality of my surname. It wasn’t the way he was. I sent it to his phone and as soon as the message alert came through I walked towards his desk.
“Why are you doing this, Mr. Black?” I asked him. “What did I do? What’s with the child tactics?” He said nothing and it felt like I could burst with tears. I hated him being angry at me and if he wasn’t going to talk now, I was about to become angry at him for being angry at me. “I’m leaving. I did nothing wrong with the stock problem. Fire me if you must.”
“Rosella,” It was enough to make me stop in my steps and shred a tear. Why I was sad is unknown but what I do know is that him being angry at me is heartbreaking. I didn’t like people being angry at me and Mr. Black, well, he counted as people.
“If there’s nothing else, sir. I would like to return to work.” I said keeping my voice as normal as possible. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if he saw me crying over nothing.
“Princess.” And I burst. I couldn’t stop the waterworks. He made me upset. We worked together a lot and I have been called in about concerns over my work but never has he called me by my surname. When he told me who he was and what he does, I became a ‘princess’. Ms. Bell was nothing unless in front of clients but he always used ‘princess’ or Rosella even when he was angry.
“I’m fine.” I sniffed. “May I go to work?”
I gave a little jump when his arms encircled me from behind. “I know, you not fine.” He turned me around and I laid my head on his chest as he rubbed my back. “Princess, it's my company, I have to be strict when it comes to negligence.” he lifted my face and wiped the tears away. My make-up was probably all over the place, the disadvantage of not using waterproof make-up. “This isn’t the first time I corrected your work. What is bothering you?”
“Nothing.” I looked down to avoid eye contact. “That time of the month, I guess.” I shrugged. He gave me a look and the longer he stared at me the more I felt myself telling him the truth. “You called me by my surname and you never call me by my surname.”
And just like that, I felt ashamed of myself. I never admitted to Ben, why I was upset but a simple thing like that and spilled my guts out to him. Mr. Black had control over me, whether he knows it or not.
