As the director promised, a few days after judgment day the letter I had been dreading had arrived at my door. Well it was more my Aunties door. Ever since my Dad died, I have been in his sister's care. Living in her house and helping her and my Grandmother whenever I can. My heart stopped beating when I read the letter. I forced myself to read it again and again until it really sank in. It read:
Dear Anne,
We regret to inform you that you no longer have a position in the Freedom Police Academy. We wish you all the best in the future and will keep in contact with you if any available positions open.

My Auntie Sonia appeared over my shoulder as silent tears rolled down my cheeks and fell onto the letter making Derek's signature run over the academies name. 'Oh Sweet heart. I'm so sorry. I know how much this means to you. Ever since Mark left you in my care, your whole world has been nothing but honouring your Father.' My eyes welled up with tears as I tried to stop myself from crying. I was better than that, but I couldn't stop myself. I dropped the letter to the ground letting it float to the floor. My hands covered my eyes and I cried. Sonia tried to calm me down by gently holding me while she rocked back and forth. It was something that always calmed me down. Once I had finished crying, I decided to make my skills useful while I could. I applied for various self-defence lessons and jobs in local supermarkets around Freedom. It was all I could do. To every application I sent in this information:
My name is Anne Kilberny and I am 15 years old. My Father died 3 years ago and I am currently living with my Auntie. I was in training with the Freedom Police Academy for the last 3 years until my position was taken......etc.
Sure enough a few days after sending my applications out I received a job as a checkout chick at the local Fruit and Veg store. The uniform was horrible. It was a white button up top with long sleeves accompanied with a short black skirt and itchy stockings. At least I was starting somewhere.
