"Who's this?" Xiao Zhan cornered me accusingly the next morning, his phone raised, screen depicting the post I made yesterday.

I raised both my hands in mock surrender, "A friend. Why?"

He frowned, "I thought you were together together with Captain!"

My brows skyrocketed at the absurd idea. "Minghao?" I laughed. "Nah, no. Man's family, mate."

He made a sound, then squinted closer at Yangyang in the picture, observing. "He's pretty good looking."

I side-eyed him, nudging, "Interested?" I slung an arm around his shoulder, "I can introduce you to him, no problem."

He patted my arm, pocketting his phone. "别别别,小的哪敢跟老娘您抢男朋友啊?(Nope nope nope, it's fine. My peasant ass haven't rights to so much as touch your boyfriend.)"

"你胡说什么?我哪来的男朋友呀?(That's some high level bullshit, bro. What boyfriend?)" I balked, raising an accusing finger.

He grinned cheekily. "It just a matter of time before one of you slip up and confess, isn't it?"

I squinted at him in disbelief, "I think there's some misconception here. This guy is really not my boyfriend-"

"Yet."

"Good evening, Yangyang. Just like the old times."

The Liu boy didn't even have to raise his head to know who it was. "Shut up," he responded monotonously. "Firstly, am I supposed to take this quoting of Silence of the Lamb as a bad omen? I really don't think I can deal with anymore bad news today. Secondly, look at how bright the sun is shining outside, what do you mean evening? Have you gone blind?"

A corner of Soyeon's lips quirked up, "Whoever pissed in your tea today, Liu?" The girl made herself at home, brewing herself a pot of vanilla tea.

Yangyang brushed the remark off, fanning himself with the traditional hand fan he found chucked inside one of the storage cabinets, "You said you've news to tell me?" His eyes were still fixated on the dried flowers he was sorting out with his other hand. "On a scale of one to ten, how bad is it?"

"Ten being the worst?" Soyeon snickered. "We're hitting a solid eleven, baby."

The boy's brows soared to his hairline, an imaginary gloomy cloud looming over his head like a dark halo. "Just what I fucking need right now," he said sarcastically, rolling his shoulders back as if to physically prepare himself for the coming bad news.

"My bad," she raised her hands in mock surrender, then dropped them. "But it's pretty important bad news. Remember the big Clan leaders and heirs who are concentrated in my school clique?"

Of course Yangyang did. He doubted anyone didn't know at this point.

Maybe the identity of 'Winwin' was still considered a big secret, but everyone who does know about the Underground surely does know the name Dong Sicheng.

And who didn't know Lee Taeyong? This was a name as bone-chilling as Choi Siwon back in the days. Especially recently. The Lees had been on war-path since the start of the year and had been winning plots after plots of land in Busan- even land they'd never found much use for or interest in. It seemed to Yangyang that they weren't attacking for personal interest anymore. They were flexing what they could do, threatening the Dong-Huangs in a subtlety that was not very... subtle actually. They were rolling the dice, making their move.

Choi Hansol was a recent addition to the list of frightful Clan heirs. He was so clueless and blank about everything that people felt afraid of him. Everyone thought he was just putting up a dumb act, but he really wasn't. He really had no idea what he was doing, but he was unknowing really ruthless while being confused. Man was just real lucky to be doing all the right things and somehow calling the right commands all at the right time.

"Ah, the pricks," Yangyang nodded solemnly.

The girl huffed out a laugh, shaking her head, "They're not that bad usually, and Hansol's a total sweetheart, really. Man won't even hurt a fly on purpose. He's going to have a whole mental breakdown when he finds out what sort of consequences his earlier decisions had caused." At Yangyang's pointed look, she hastily went back to the initial news she was on her way to breaking to him. "Well that aside, we've a big problem."

"Yeah, I figured," the tennis prodigy groaned. "So what is the problem?"

"The Dong-Huangs," she begun. "Are going to gut us."

He whipped his head around to look her straight in the eye, searching her face for any sort of mirth or joke, but there was nothing but solemn grimness.

"Sorry, why the fuck?" he sputtered, looking back at the piles of flowers in front of him. "We haven't even done anything!"

The girl opened her arms. "Exactly!" she agreed. "Which is why I'm here to see you. We've got to make our move fast. Get a hold of her so if the Dong-Huangs really gut us, it'd be worth. Or the Lees are going to use this as some sort of PR excuse to convince more people to join his movement to take down the Dong-Huangs." She scrunched her face, mimicking Taeyong's voice, "The Dong-Huangs are bad, bad people! They will beat your Clan up for no reason! Off with their heads! Join my mad plan! The blood of the martyrs will water the meadows of South Korea!"

Yangyang choked at the final line, catching her Les Miserable reference. "I have no fucking idea how you still have the mood to be quoting movies in these hard and trying times."

"We all have our own coping mechanisms, little sheep," Soyeon sighed dramatically, picking up tea pot when she deemed the tea colour dark enough. "Some of us just use less common ways to deal with stress. Don't be toxic and judgy now."

"What do you mean now?" he chortled, grabbing a handful of piled dried flowers and shoving it into it's rightful drawer. "I have always been toxic and judgy."

"Glad that you're self-aware."

..

It was obvious the hinges of the trapdoor to the roof hadn't been oiled for a long time, they screeched as I shoved it up. When they gave way, I pulled myself forward, crawling onto the roof.

The icy breeze felt like ice-shards as they kissed my skin, sending jolts of shivers down my body. How did I use to spend hours emoing on roof?

The roof of the East Wing Building was flat, so it was obvious to see that the person I came for was here already. He had his feet swinging off the parapet, a hand clutch the metal railing for safety, and wind tousling his unkempt inky dark hair.

For a second, I just stood back and admired. This was the type of peace that never last long in my life. I had to enjoy it.

Then it started to get real cold and I decided I want to get this over and done with as quickly as possible.

"Hi!" I grinned at the boy who nearly yeeted himself off the parapet at my sudden arrival. "Long time no see."

Lai Guanlin pressed a hand to his chest, heaving as if he ran a full ass marathon without a single moment of break, "The fuck, Yilin." He turned to give me the nastiest look I've seen this month. "Are you trying to kill me?"

"Dear Lord no, of course not," I waved him off, hiking myself up next to him with as much ease as my body could allow for. "I'd be the first suspect and you know how xenophobic Korea is. I won't even get a chance to open my mouth before getting my ass hauled to jail."

"Jail?" he barked out a laugh, "It's execution straight away, Wang."

"You're absolutely right."

He flashed me an amused look, then leaned back, letting the cool wind ruffle his hair. "How's it here? Anyone giving you a hard time?"

"Are you of all people worried I'd be bullied?" I snorted. "Really, Lai? As if anyone can bully me."

"What? You hit another jackpot and got close to the popular kids again?"

"No," I lift a shoulder in a shrug. "I bashed them up on the first day."

Guanlin choked on air, gagging, "You what?"

"You heard it right," I patted him. "Don't doubt yourself."

He shook his head, muttering something under his breath that I have a feeling wasn't positive about me, then sobered up. "I heard you've become some sort of a golden key in this Game of Thrones." He side-eyed me, a teasing smile playing on his lips. "How does it feel to be so wanted?"

"Where are you getting all these intel?" I raised a brow. "Didn't you already leave the Dong-Huangs?"

He opened his hands, "Can't help but listen in when the Lees in Gangwon talk about it in class." He let out a short laugh, "They think they're discreet, but they really aren't." He tilted his head to look at me. "So what's your plan? Are you going to join them?"

"You gotta be more specific who this 'them' refers to, champ."

"The Lees," he dragged out the surname purposefully. "Who else? The Dong-Huangs?"

A corner of my lips twitched upwards. "Is this what you're here for? To convince me to join the Lees?"

"No, not quite, actually."

I cocked my head at him and he elaborated.

"I'm here to talk about the Dong-Huangs," he said. "Well in greater particular, Dong Sicheng."

I fought to keep my face neutral, but I had a feeling I wasn't especially successful.

"I know," he continued with a laugh, noting the look on my face. "I know you have far less than favourable opinions on him, but you've got to hear me out on this. Dong Sicheng is not his father."

"No," I agreed, "He's far worse."

He looked amused, "In what aspect?"

"Guts and brains," I raised two fingers. "Sicheng is very bold and very clever. Did you hear how he rose to power?"

He nodded. Of course he heard. He was probably still in the Clan back then. This was all probably new news to me and me only, all thanks to the two years of amnesia.

"He really skinned the Clan heir alive back then and hung his skin up," Guanlin shuddered. "I saw the skin with my own two eyes. Scarring. I heard he even skinned the man in front of a crowd. Thank God I didn't walk in on that too. It's was like he lost his mind then."

I pointed to him, "Exactly! That was exactly what he wanted others to see him as- mad, crazy. A brilliant cover so no one would pick up the pattern of his actions."

His face was impassive. "The pattern of his actions?" he echoed.

"Don't tell me you've never noticed how the only people who've left his office alive are his own 'recruits'," I deadpanned. "You're better than that, come on. I trusted you to have some brains, we even pulled off the smoothest murder together!"

The Lai boy's eyes darted to my face, trying to decipher the message I was sending him, repeating what I'd said in his head slowly. "What the Hell is going on now?"

"Dong Sicheng is cleansing out the followers of the previous generation, replacing them with his own dogs. Has been for a while now. Something big is brewing," I quipped. "Are you following along my line of thoughts now?"

"Absolutely not," his reply came without hesitation. "But let's make things easier for us both with something I can understand: On a scale of one to ten, how badly do you want to see the Dong-Huang Clan go down?"

"A solid ten, but from what I'm hearing, you're aiming to change my mind," I watched as his eyes flickered with a sort of silence surprise before a small smile curved his lips. "So tell me, why should I not want to bring the Dong-Huang Clan down?"

"Times have changed, Wang," he said wistfully. "The Clan has changed. It is no longer as it was when Sicheng's father was reigning. Things are run differently now."

"And you want me to spare them because they've changed?" I scorned. "Not a chance, Lai. They'd not hesitate to end me, why should I hesitate to end them?"

The smile playing on his lips stretched.

"There was a time we killed the King. We tried to change the world too fast," he quoted softly. "Now we have got another King. He is no better than the last. And the one after won't be better. Nor the one after that. Your hands are just going to get bloodier and bloodier. There is no clear cut black and white in the world. No proper right and no proper wrong. It is not kill or be killed, Yilin. That was just a lie we'd convinced ourselves to believe in so we could feel better about the lives we've taken."

"You want me to do nothing," I noted. "Knowing full and well they'd still going to come for me even if I do nothing? That's a brilliant plan, Lai. Might as well just push me off the building right now since you want me to die that bad." The words left my mouth with a sour taste.

"They'd never be able to kill you. You're more than capable of fending for yourself," came his response. "You know that too. You don't have to destroy them to protect yourself. That's what I'm saying." He patted me lightly on the shoulder, and threw his legs back onto the roof floor, straightening. "But at the end of the day, the choice is still yours."
