I don't know exactly what tipped me off, but sometime in the car ride, I knew something was wrong. Whether it be the streets were to quiet or the road to smooth, things were unfamiliar. It wasn't until we were into the car far too long to get to the Brooklyn that I opened my mouth.
"Where are we going?" I ask. I didn't face where I knew Howard was. I was trying my best to ignore him and sherry who was sitting on his lap.
"what do you mean?" Sherry asked with her annoyingly squeaky voice. It was like nails on a chalkboard in my head.
"We're not going to the brownstone, I know we're not in Brooklyn."
"We're going to the Manor. You'll be staying with me until this deal goes through. It is supposed to be a secret and you too much already. I don't trust you to keep your big mouth shut for two days so you will be staying with me until then." Howard explains dispassionately. I hear a gate creak open and we start speeding down what I assume is Howard's long driveway the car turned and stopped. Howard got out of the car then walked around to drag me out.
"But what about school? And Eric? I can't stay here until Tuesday." I try to convince the man, but I know it won't do any good.
"I'll take care of it, now come on." He rumbles while gripping my arm none too gently. Someone opened the door for us as Howard pulled me along. No matter how much I tried I couldn't keep track of where we were going. I stubbed my shins on some steps at one point, but a solid 5 minutes of lefts and rights left me dazed and confused. Suddenly we stopped. I heard Howard fumble with the door, I thought I could hear it unlock. He opened the door and we descended another staircase. I could feel the walls on either side of the staircase and as we went up to it curved and curved. Once we got to the top of the staircase there was another door, this one without a lock.
Of course, Howard would keep me in a tower. He's such a megalomaniac. The room was cold and dry, the floor was an impassionate tile on my cold feet.
Hans' withdrawn personality came back to me all of a sudden. The way he chose to separate himself from everyone else and leaving a cold stamp on the world. The memory of what happened in the hallway came back to me and I was infinitely grateful that that dinner was all over.
"What? Nothing left to say? You seemed to be quite comfortable running your mouth earlier. Howard growled into my ear after I didn't respond to him speaking to me. His tone gave me chills and I was afraid of the anger he seemed to be poorly holding back. I took a step into the room away from him.
"What was it you said? Something about appearances?" He seethes while following me into the room. "And your comment to the daughter, that could have cost me the entire deal! You should be grateful that he saw it as pointless fun. Mr. Chamberlain believes in strong relationships between his business partners and their kids. I had to show our good father-daughter relationship at that dinner. But you will never stop being a little selfish bitch."
"You will never be my father." I spat at him. Hoping the venom in my words would make him back off, but it had the opposite effect.
"They don't know that." He responds
"Bastard." I fume. I regretted saying it as soon as the words came from my mouth. Why did I have to feed the flames of every little thing?
I heard it before I felt it. I heard the sharp slap of skin on skin before I registered the sting on my cheek and the ache of my elbows and knees that I now rested on. The slap was so forceful it had knocked me strait of my feet. Before I could get my bearing and fight back Howard kicked me in the stomach twice and knocked the wind out of me. The horrible pain didn't help me calm down to drag air into my lungs. When I finally got control of my breathing once again, Howard grabbed me by my hair and pulled my head up. He must have been kneeling beside me because I could hear his heavy breathing. As if kicking the shit out of me had made him lose his breath.
"You think you can speak to me like that bitch?" Howard yelled as he shook me by my hair. The pain brought tears to my eyes and my head wouldn't stop spinning. I tried to knee him, but as soon as I tensed my abs the pain doubled and I had to give up my efforts to fight back.
"You think you have a right to the Lewis name? You think you have a family? Your mother is dead because of you! Who could love someone like you? You're a murderer. You aren't my daughter. You are nothing you hear me? You are just another pawn in a game of chess you could never have any hope of fathoming! You've played you're purpose. And you will continue to do so. Understood?" I was sobbing by the time he finished tearing me apart piece by piece. When I didn't respond he shook me once again and repeated his question. I managed to meekly nod my head. With that Howard dropped me to the ground and left. I could hear the lock of the bottom door even through the raging storm of utter helplessness surrounding me. What's going to happen to me?
