Raines POV:
Last night, shortly after I completely broke down in front of Brandon, he put on some show for background noise and we laid in my bed. I fell asleep next to him and he must have left soon after I fell asleep, because when I awoke an hour later he was gone and his spot was cold.
I sighed, I'll see him Monday. I thought.
I feel my clock and it says that it's 11:52pm. I walk to Eric's room to see if he's in there. He is not. I go down the 18 stairs and walk into the kitchen. I count the cabinets 1...2...3 and grab a glass from the 4th.
I fill the glass with water and take a sip. Funny, Eric's not home. He is usually home by 10. Maybe he's finally taking some time to live a little before college. Eric has always valued his school work more than fun. And yet he is still very popular at school.
He also has a girlfriend named Erica, which was really hilarious when it first happened. Eric, Erica. Get it? Anyway when they were in 9th grade and became official, I thought it was vitally important to point out that if they had kids they had to name them one variation of the name Eric. I was an annoying 6th grader.
Anyway, Erica is extremely caring and funny, she's one of the nicest girls I've ever met.
Both Eric and Erica got accepted into NYU, which they will attend in four months. And that's precisely why Eric can't get cut off! Especially since Erica got the scholarship and not Eric.
I went to bed and fell asleep. Dreaming about random shit that had nothing to do with my life.
I woke up with knotted hair and a bad taste in my mouth. Honestly, my morning breath could kill a moose.
I quickly go into the bathroom and brush my teeth.
I couldn't help but think about how that seamstress acted yesterday. She was not only completely disrespectful she said: "If You had a mother she wouldn't dress you like that." I had managed to hold it together, but when Brandon had brought up my tenth birthday, I almost went over the edge.
I head downstairs with minty breath and upsetting thoughts on my mind. I heard Eric in the kitchen.
"Hey Eric, I didn't hear you come in last night" I observe.
"I came in around 9ish, you were probably asleep." He replies, "You want me to make you breakfast." He tries to change the subject, and I let him. I ignore the lie he told me without hesitation.
"No, I'll make something for myself later." I answer.
"Alright. Well sorry I can't stay longer. I have to work on a math thing." He elaborates.
"On Saturday?"
"Yes"
"Again?" I ask
"What?
"Well Thursday you were working on a 'math thing'. Is your teacher like riding your ass or something?"
"Y-yeah I think he thinks that with a month left in school that he needs to cram in as much math as he can."
"Ha Ha. Well hurry up and leave, I don't want you to fall behind." I say and I hear his shirt ruffle signifying he nodded. On his way out the door he seems to pause.
But it only lasts a millisecond before he is out the door and gone. Leaving me alone. Alone with my thoughts. Great.
To try and drown out the silence I start listening to the piano cover of Für Elise. Not my favorite piece, but it will do.
I find myself playing an invisible piano along with the music. My hands freeze along with a painful stab to my heart. Monday's my birthday.
Flashback:
"Daddy, when's mommy coming home?" My ten year old self asks.
"Not until tomorrow sweetheart. You know that mommy's on an important business trip, so she can't make it home for your birthday. So stop asking already!"
"Sorry daddy."
"It's fine Gertrude, but now go play with your brother, I have a headache." Daddy dismisses.
"Okay daddy." I obey.
I turn and use the furniture as a guide to the staircase. At the top of the stairs I counted 54 steps to reach Eric's room.
I knock on his door and wait, because he is always changing his furniture around.
"Hey pip! Come here I have a present for you" Eric announces as he picks me up and carries me to his bed. He sets me down in front of him and opens what sounds and smells like his laptop. Suddenly I hear my mother's voice.
"Raine! oh my beautiful raincloud happy birthday!" mommy greets
"MOMMY!" I scream ecstatic to hear her voice after two months.
"Raine, darling, I got an earlier flight so I can make it to your birthday! I'm on the plane right now. I should be home soon." She exclaims
"Surprise!" Eric adds.
"Mommy, how was London?" I ask excitedly.
"Oh, It was fantastic. Not to cold, but not to hot. It was loud but not too loud. Oh and there were so many smells! I brought you home a candle!" I loved the way mommy described things to me. Never explaining how something looked, always telling me things I would understand.
"Mommy what'd you do in London? Did you meet anyone famous? Did you visit 221b baker street? Did you-"
"Slow down darling. I will tell you all about it once I get home later tonight." She interrupted, "Now Raine you only turn 10 once. I hope you will remember it fondly."
"Bye Bye mommy!" I farewell.
"Bye mom!" Eric follows in suit.
"Goodbye my lovely children, I'll see you later tonight. I love you both." She hung up.
End of Flashback
She never did make it home that night. No, approximately 2 hours after we said our goodbyes there was some sort of engine failure and the plane went into the ocean. My mother died September 29th. 5 years and 363 days ago.
Before I know it an hour had passed and Für Elise had ceased playing long ago.
That's what happens when I think about my mom. Time flies. I wish we had had more time. I miss you mom. Would you have stood for what dad is making me do? Would you save me? Stop Raine there is no need for thinking those thoughts. Mom is dead, and there's nothing I can do about it.
