"Raaaaaiiiiiiinnnnnnnn"
Darkness. That's all I can see. Or maybe it's can't see. I'm not quite sure. I'm not your #1 grammar chic. Not that I've ever really tried to learn grammar, I mean what's the point when you can't read? Well I can read just not the same way you do. We-
Here let me start over.
Hi, my name is Gertrude Rain Lewis. I am blind. BAM! Plot twist! No just kidding you can't really have a plot twist when there isn't any plot yet. Don't get confused I am blind. Okay! Now let's get on with that plot.
Again I am blind. Now don't get all weepy on me, I don't see it as a disability. Everyone tries to treat me like I'm so fragile. I'm not. Far from it. Although I'm blind I leaned a long time ago how to use my other senses to my advantage.
Like hearing is one of my strongest senses. When I use my cane I can hear the ricochets off the wall and get a little bit of an idea of how big the room is, or where there is big furniture or something like that.
I have been fluent in brail ever since I was 4ish. Don't want to toot my own horn or anything but even for blind kids that's pretty early.
Okay so you're probably wondering "how did this poor girl loose her sight?!" Well here is the most boring answer I can give you. I was never graced with the gift of sight. No I was born this way. I wasn't in an accident or anything like that. I'm not Matt Murdock, I didn't go blind from saving some old guy from an oil truck. No something happened when my mom was pregnant with me and a bunch of long medical words later I was born blind. I know boring origin story right?
"Raaaaaaaiiiiiiiinnnnn" my brother calls once again.
I sigh loudly and get out of my bed. I run my hands over my brail clock and feel that it's 8:15. School starts in an hour.
I walk into my bathroom and wash my face. I brush my teeth while I go back into my room to pick my out fit. I open the closet door and feel for a t-shirt. I find one and check the hanger for the color. It says black. I grab it a pair of jeans and a jean jacket and lay it all on my bed. I go back into the bathroom to spit and rinse. I put my toothbrush away and go back into my room to change.
Once I'm changed I grab my cane and head downstairs. I greet my brother when I reach the bottom.
"Hey Eric" I greet
"Hey baby sis, what took you so long to get up?" He asks
"I was contemplating life" I say dramatically
"Yeah sure" he replies sarcastically "You want a ride to school?"
"Eric no!" I exclaim "by the time you drive me to school you won't be able to back across town and make it to your classes on time. Plus I was planning on walking anyway."
When I was born our parents moved our family to Brooklyn NYC where there was a special school for the blind. But it was on the other side of town from Eric's school. For his 16th birthday Eric got a car because our house is closer to my school than it is his.
My school is k-12 and has a total of 162 kids ranging from totally blind to kids who are half blind and can't keep up with public school.
"I don't like it when you walk to school alone." Eric states. I roll my eyes eternally.
"I can take care of myself" I reply
"Rain you're blind" he says
"Did you think I forgot?" I ask a little grumpily. Now people I'm not being sour because I'm blind. I'm being sour because it is still the morning and I hate the morning.
Eric just sighs and hand me a piece of toast as we head out the door. I make sure I have my keys before Eric locks it. "Have a nice day Rain. I love you." He says
"I love you too, Eric." I reply
