So here I am. Crouched under the sink, thinking about them. A few hours ago, the city alarm went off. Since then fear has taken hold of me. My heart is pounding so fast that I wonder if I will be able to make it out alive from under the damp sink without having a heart attack.  But who or what will trigger it? That remains to be seen. Perhaps my mother when she will discover that I ate all the chocolate her best friend gave her. Or perhaps...

A loud bang cuts off my thoughts. Someone seems to have opened, or should I say, broken the door. I can hear his footsteps heading towards my parents. "His" footsteps or "their" footsteps? From what I hear, I think they are 5 or 6. A real committee. Why are there so many? My dad is too much of a coward to flee and I'm pretty sure my mom will faint before they even lift a finger. Should I be flattered? They seem to believe I'm strong and dangerous. Just like I told my former karate teacher: I do have muscles in my arms, they're just not visible.

Anyway. Why am I thinking about that? I should be freaking out right now! Dear Lord, if you exist, help me! I'd rather die than be the mate of one of these monsters. Although he might be kind, right? They look a bit brutal but they could actually be real softies inside. I don't know. People depict them as monsters and those who say otherwise are seen as enemies. But nothing is black and white in a war. Right?

"You and you. Where is your female? Don't lie to us: one of the neighbors told us that you have in your possession a young lass in age to be mated. You'd better answer us quickly if you don't want to die in an excruciating pain for treason!"

Tears rolled silently on my cheeks. Because of all those hours spent hidden under the sink I caught a cold. I hope my mom will make me milk with honey, once this is all over. There is nothing better than this homemade remedy. My mom is the best at making this drink.

Once more, the sound of footsteps pulls me out of my thoughts. Surprisingly it seems only one person is walking. I don't understand where are the others? What is going on? The sound is getting closer. Can he smell my presence? Hear me breathing? Feel me moving? Please someone save me. Anyone. I don't want to be at these monsters' mercy. I cling to the wall. I wish it could absorb me. My body is so tense that I can't breathe anymore.

The footsteps stop. Right in front of me. So close that I could probably touch his heavy boots. The only thing separating us is the wooden board masking the sink. All coherent thoughts have left me. Now I understand what my classmate Melina's life looks like. My mind suddenly goes blank. My heart is beating way too fast.

Right when I'm about to faint, the wooden boards open with a squeak. And all of a sudden my mind reintegrates my body. "It" looks at me. I (damn curiosity!) look up and I find myself face to face with whiteness...
