Odette isn't sure what the worst part of Betsy's death is. At first she thought nothing would be worse than finding your best friends cold corpse, and then she had to speak to Betsy's mother after the police notified her family. For a while she decides that's the worst.

Then she realizes that Betsy's body has to fly back home. Later it dawns upon her that she will have to speak to Betsy's loved ones in person at her funeral. Everyone will see that even though Odette ran off to California with Betsy because Betsy needed an escape, Odette got an amazing relationship with the perfect man,

and all Betsy got was a cold marble headstone.

Ethan holds her as she cries. But he doesn't understand, she won't let him understand, doesn't even give him the chance. She's afraid to divulge how this how ordeal makes her hate herself more, how she blames herself. She knows that if Ethan starts to understand he'll hate and blame her too.

She hasn't eaten in three days, and she's barely been sleeping. Ethan is sitting next to her in the first class cabin on the airplane. It isn't as nice as she always imagined. She can hardly get comfortable, but eventually the klonopin she popped earlier kick in and she's asleep soundly for the first time since she lost her best friend.
