Danny watched as his wife and her best friend laughed and blushed at their pictures together. Obviously, they were the best of friends. He admired his wife for many different reasons: the most prominent one at the moment was carrying their child to full term without him. He couldn't imagine how scary it was for her. His Mom had told him some of the things that had happened. She said that Linda would cry herself to sleep, and continually had to tell Jack that Daddy was just at work and was coming back. He had been told how scared Linda was, and how she had to be monitored while eating. She was too sick with worry to eat; her nerves usually got the best of her, cussing her to hurl her meal or drink. Sometimes she would just have dry heaves. He saw the unshed tears in his Mom's eyes as she relayed the information to him. She had assured him it was to help him understand his wife better, not to make him feel guilty.
"That was so stupid!" Linda's laugh interrupted his thoughts.
Danny smiled as he saw her cheeks and neck warm up. From experience, he knew her blush didn't stop there. The rosiness covered her entire body, making her skin even more beautiful. She wiped at her eyes, smiling widely.
How could someone that.... beautiful, that special.... chose someone like me? Danny knew he wasn't a bed of Roses. He knew his shortcomings; he was stubborn, he was quick to anger, he was egotistical, he was hardheaded. Why would anyone want that?
***********
He was floating, floating in the water. He felt warm, in fact, he was sweating, but his skin prickled with goosebumps. He saw clouds, nothing but clouds and grey skies. Soft, heavy breathing got his attention. He looked around, not knowing where the sound was coming from. A small moan, and a whisper of his name drew him closer to earth. More heaving breathing, becoming faster and faster, captured his attention. A whimper of his name had his feet dangling from the clouds. A yelp made his head snap up, and a pleasures scream of his name drew him completely to earth.
Danny jumped violently in the comfort of his warm bed. He closed his eyes and tried to remember what had caused such a scare. He scrunched his face in frustration, only remembering the dizzy-dancing way he felt and the soft moans of his name.
Danny.
There it was again. He sat up and looked about the dimly-lit room. His eyes took only a few moments to adjust, and he realized the moans came from beside him. He looked down at his sleeping wife, her hair splayed out behind her on her pillow. Her fists clenched tightly, her face scrunched. He felt her legs moving a little bit, and watched her move to her back. Her fists and face relaxed, and she rolled to her side again, throwing her arm into his lap.
Danny smiled; she was dreaming about something nice, he could tell. As her hand fisted the sheet above his lap, he wondered what she was dreaming about. He turned his attention the door creaking open; he put a hand on Linda, ready to protect her at all costs.
