Chapter Forty-Six

Start from the beginning

"Xi Zi?", she placed his coffee in front of him, "He is one of your friends, right?"

He nodded. "You've met him, actually. But you had too many Margaritas that time so you probably won't remember."

She raised a sardonic brow at him.

He laughed. "He's my best friend."

"Oh... so what made you smile about him?"

He suddenly realized that if he is going to talk to her about Xi Zi, he would also need to tell her about what happened over dinner. He paused to think of how to tell it to her without her misinterpreting it.

"Uhmmm... so, before I tell you anything else, I think I need to give you a backgrounder."

Yue looked surprised at that but motioned for him to continue.

"Xi Zi is one of the biggest playboys I know", he started, "That's the truth. It's not even an exaggeration because even when we were younger, he just couldn't seem to find anyone he would be in a long-term relationship with. Lately, his mother has become anxious about it because she fears he might never marry."

"Wow."

"I know..."

"And now?"

"Well, he's fallen for someone who is the very opposite of the kind of girls that he's gone after before. Her name is Xiao Wen and she's pretty straight-laced, intelligent, quite shy – sort of like Zi Wei but a lot more toned-down. My sister has a stronger personality or aura when you meet her but Wen has a presence is so much more calm."

"That's cute that he's fallen for her."

He nodded. "It is... actually... and it becomes cuter OR funnier", she huffed at him and he raised his hands up, "Well, I can't help but think it's funny because I've never seen him like that!"

Yue's brows furrowed at him. "Well for me it's cute!"

"Of course, you will think it's "cute". You are a romance author. This is the stuff you would love to write about."

"I don't think it's cute just because I'm a writer, Mr. Wang! It really IS cute!", she shook her hands about as if dismissing his last statement, "Anyway, go on!"

"Well, Xiao Wen runs in the same circles that we do and we pretty much are acquaintances. She is also one of Zi Wei's friends. She knows all of us –"

"So, she knows Xi Zi and that he IS a playboy?"

He nodded. "He's quite notorious."

"She won't want to go out with him."

"Exactly."

"Wait! Do you also find that funny?!?! That Xiao Wen wouldn't go out with Xi Zi???", Yue was aghast.

"Huh??? NO!!!! How did you get to that conclusion???"

She immediately looked properly apologetic. "Sorry. Sorry. The story isn't finished yet, right?"

He shook his head. "I'm just laying out the background."

"Sorry", she repeated more sincerely.

He wanted to comment about her being trigger-happy but stopped himself because they just might get more derailed. "Well, going back... Xi Zi knows that Xiao Wen wouldn't even give him a chance if he ever made a move on her. That has kept him up for a lot of nights and we've been thinking of ways for him to even get just a sliver of a chance."

"Ok..."

"Well, this chance came tonight."

Her face showed that something clicked inside her mind. "Is this related to the dinner you had tonight with your friends?"
