Episode Eighteen

It took one hell of a lie to get Jamie out of hot water for letting me borrow the car, but once I did our focus changed to the victim and his family.

It's always heartbreaking to have to tell someone that any part of their family died, but it's worse when it's a mother and her son. She cried, a lot, but was able to answer any and every question she asked. Right when we were about to leave she handed us a sweatshirt, and I swear Danny had tears in his eyes. She asked us to make sure that her son was wearing it when they finish with the body. We promised that we would.

By mid afternoon we had picked up Kenai, and knew the guy who did it. Erin was explaining exactly who the guy was.

"Peru Businessman and also Harlem's savior. Raymundo Salazar is a Peruvian drug lord, he runs the El Mal crew, which smuggles the hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of cocaine into New York every month." A knock on the door came when Erin finished speaking, and in walked an official looking man. "This is Lyle Green, Special Narcotics Prosecutor. Lyle, this is my brother, Detecive Daniel Reagan, and his partner, Detective Inspector Jett Howards, and DI Howards' canine partner Kenai."

I shook hands with the man. "Salazar is the man I've spent the past year trying to get him off the streets, unsuccessfully." Green stuffed his hands into his pockets after shaking ours. "We haven't been able to get him linked directly to the drugs, and we've never had a witness willing to testify."

I nod along to his speech, and hold off speaking at the pause in his words.

"The Peruvian counterparts that we have a standing with tell us that he has a history of torturing and killing anyone willing to testify, even if that means getting to the person's family first." Green pulls a picture from the file under his arm. "This is a lieutenant in his organization that agreed to testify. The lieutenant was in the wind, but Salazar got to his family first. Wife, two kids, all shot execution style. Not a single witness would come forward."

"Until now." I nod firmly, re-positioning Kenai's leash in my hand. She laid down on the ground, her head resting on the top of my foot.

"I mean no disrespect, but you are sure it was him?" I could tell that Green was just getting all of his boxes checked, so I wasn't insulted in anyway.

"It was dark, but no doubt that it was him." I respond, Green nods, taking a deep breath before speaking.

"Then catch him, and then I'll be able to charge him."

"I will, thank you Mr. Green." I shake his hand once more before he leaves the room. It's silent for a minute, before I deflate a bit. "I hope I didn't just make an impossible deal." I mutter.

"It depends on if we can do this?" Danny replies, and I turn to him, confident that we can.

"He's constantly on the move. He never stays in the same place twice, and changes his address and cars three times a week." Erin sighs as she speaks, "I don't mean to be a downer, but how are you going to get him if he's in the wind?"

Danny speaks before I can, "I tell you what, when we lock his ass up, I'll know exactly where to find him." I snort, pulling a chair towards the front of Erin's desk and taking a seat, Kenai sat next to me. It gets quiet again, before Erin picks up a stack of papers on her desk.

"All of the DEA's transcripts and tracking data." She passes the stack across the desk to me, and I take a look at the top few pieces of paper.

"I don't understand why Salazar would kill the boy himself." I muttered, holding the stack firmly in my lap.

"There's a connection." Erin picked up a photograph from her desk, looking at it, before handing it across the table for Danny and I to look at. "That's the victim's brother. Mark Taylor. Who is suspected of funneling money into wall street from El Mal."

I nod, sighing loudly. I rake my hand through my hair, before standing. Danny speaks, "We'll keep you posted sis."

As Danny and I left her office I concentrated on the stack of papers she had handed to me. A name was underlined multiple times. Sylvia, she works at a Barber shop in Harlem, on the 125th. Once we step onto the elevator, I share the information with Danny in hushed tones, muttering about how you never know who's listening.

He drove this time, and to be honest, I dozed off against the window as he did. The drive just long enough for me to be able to get enough of a nap to wake up refreshed.

"Have a nice nap?" Danny asks as we climb out of the car.

"Piss off." I mutter, Danny grabs Kenai from the back.

"I'll take that as a no." I chuckle dryly, pausing for Danny on the sidewalk. We both approach the woman, him taking the left side, and I take the right. "Sylvia, police. Keep walking." The woman freezes, but does what we ask.

I flash my badge, "I need to ask you a few questions about your boyfriend Raymundo Salazar."

"Never heard of him." Sylvia says, a slight accent to her voice.

"Really? Maybe this will jog your memory. Get in the car." Danny gives her a nudge towards the back door of our car. He climbs in after her, taking Kenai with him. I get in the front seat. The second I start the car she spills everything. Telling us exactly who the boy was to her, and how she tried to hide their relationship from Salazar. I was surprised that she gave up information so easily, but everyone has different limits.

"You gotta tell us where we can find him." Danny says, his voice just a bit softer than before.

Her shoulders slumped, "His lieutenant, Lupino, he set up a hair cut for tomorrow. 10 a.m."

"Thank you Sylvia." Danny told her that she can leave, and that we'll see her tomorrow, before climbing into the front passenger seat. "Drive to yours, and then I'll take the car back to mine."

I nodded, putting the car into drive and pulling out of the parking space. The drive was silent, not that I minded. Some part of me hoped that Jameson would be at my flat when I got there, but at the same time I knew that it would be hard to explain to Danny why Jameson was there. As I pulled up to the curb I sighed in relief at the fact that Jameson wasn't there.

"I'll swing by and get you tomorrow morning." Danny said as we both climbed out of the car. I nodded, letting Kenai out of the back. "Stay safe."

"You too."
