You Don't Need Him (Miles Edgeworth x Reader)

A/N: In this one, the reader does not have a relationship with her father. This takes place right after her wedding rehearsal.

No One's Pov:

Edgeworth made his way out to the reception hall, where everyone was chatting. The wedding rehearsal had just finished up. Just then, Edgeworth managed to bump into Phoenix, "Hey, thanks for coming." Phoenix spoke, "You're not having second thoughts about me being your best man, are you? And by the way, your venue is beautiful." Edgeworth shook his head, "No, no. I'm glad you could make it. And yeah. I agree." Edgeworth looked around, "The rehearsal did go pretty smoothly overall. Hopefully there will be a few less giggles during the actual ceremony tomorrow. Though the pastor imitating the princess bride was pretty hilarious."

He imitated the pastor, "Marriage is what wings us together today." Then, he continued normally, "Well I think it'd be hilarious if she did that tomorrow but I don't think the parents would find it quite as funny." Phoenix rose an eyebrow, "Are you nervous? You seem anxious and that's not like you." Edgeworth reiterated his question, "Am I nervous? Well maybe a little. I just want everything to go right, you know? I know, I
know if at the end of the day we're
married it all went well. I just want
everything to be perfect for her. It's
her big day. I'm just the guy lucky enough to marry her."

Phoenix tilted his head, "Is her father walking her down?" Edgeworth sighed, "Her father? No no. He's not in her life. That's why her brother is walking her down the aisle. I won't go into it because it's not my story to tell. Let's just, uh, yeah. Let's just leave it at that for now. Okay, speaking of my beautiful bride, I haven't seen her for 10 whole minutes. That just won't do. Not when I have to spend the night away from her. You know bad luck to see each other before the ceremony and all that. Now, please excuse me. I'll catch back up with you."

With that, Edgeworth made his way through the groups of people crowding the dining hall, "Excuse me, coming through. Anyone see my bride?" He passed Apollo and Klavier, "Hey, good to see you. Thanks for coming." He then passed Ema and Lana, "Let me just squeeze past you. Thanks. Have you seen-" Lana cut him off, "By the entrance, Mr. Edgeworth." He nodded, "Oh, she was by the restaurant entrance. Okay thanks I'll find her and be right back."

Your Pov:

I stood outside the restaurant, pale and shaking. I heard the door open and Miles' voice behind me, "Darling,  there you are. I've been looking for-" He paused, coming around to look at me, "What's wrong love? You're white as a sheet. What's-" Then he noticed who stood not far away. My father.

Miles' eyes darkened, "You. What are you doing here?!" He growled, "You son of a bitch! How dare you come here tonight! ow did you even know about...you know what? Don't answer that!" My father went to speak but Miles cut him off, "I don't fucking care how you found out. You have no right to be here! Not after everything you've done to her." I stood halfway behind Miles when my father spoke, "But I'm her father." Miles scoffed.

"You're her father?! No you lost the right to call yourself any kind of parent long ago. She doesn't want you in her life and she's in her right not to." My father turned to me, "(Y/n), you-" Miles cut him off, "No, no, no. You don't talk to her. You talk to me. You don't even look at her! You deal with me man-to-man and mark my words, I will give your picture to all our friends and the event staff tomorrow. Don't you dare come or we'll call the police. I should be calling them right now!"

My father rolled his eyes, "What? You want money? Please." Miles snapped. "No, we don't want your fucking money! We don't need anything from you! I wish I could just fucking erase you from her life but I'll settle for kicking you out and telling you if you do anything to ruin tomorrow for her, I will end you old man. Now turn around and get the fuck out before I do something I'll regret."

I collapsed to the ground, shaking. Tears streamed down my face as I tried to breath through it. I heard Miles, "Darling, come here. Let me hold you. It's okay. It's okay. He's gone. He's gone. It's okay. It's okay. God..." He held me tighter, "Oh, you're shaking. I've got you. I've got you. He's gone. Okay, he's gone."  I bit my lip, "I-I'm sorry..." Miles shook his head, "No,  no, no. Don't apologize. Look at me. Look at me. Listen, none of this is your fault. Do you understand? You haven't done anything wrong darling. It's okay. It's okay. Come here. That said, hold onto me. Breathe."

I tried to breath, my lungs shakily inhaled and exhaled air like a fish out of water. Miles patted my back, "Darling, slowly. There you go. It's over. It's all over now. I'm here." I looked up at him, "Do we have to stay any longer?" Miles helped me stand straight, "What? No, we don't have to stay. The party is winding down anyway. Come on. I'm taking you home. I'm staying with you all night."

I shook my head, "I-It's bad luck, remember?" He frowned slightly, "Hmm. Oh, I don't care if it's bad luck to see each other before the ceremony. I'm not leaving you alone after what just happened. You shouldn't have to deal with this all by yourself. I'll send my best man a quick text and he can make our excuses. Let's go, dear." After that, I fell asleep in his arms, the tearstains drying up.

I awoke in our bed. Miles was sitting on the bed next to me. The memories from earlier came back to me and I tried not to move as more tears ram down my face. I heard him speak, "You're awake. I can tell because you keep shifting around. Come here.

I leaned against his chest, sniffling. He spoke softly, "I know it hurts. Fucking goddamn him for ruining tonight but trust me he will not get anywhere near you tomorrow. If he's stupid enough to try, well, our friends will take care of it and you won't even hear a thing. We're all gonna protect you okay?" I muttered, "People in my family want me to forgive him..." Miles looked down at me, "Hmm, what's that darling? I can't quite hear you." I sighed and repeated what I said. He tilted his head slightly.

"Someone told you that you should forgive him? Oh love. No, you don't have to forgive him. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. They don't,  they can't possibly know the whole situation. People get stupid around weddings. Sometimes they think people should just grin and bear it for the sake of looking like a happy family but he's he's not your family and you don't ever have to pretend that he is."

"You don't ever have to forgive him if
y

ou don't want to. In all those years,  the way he would tear you down and pick you apart, make you...make you feel so small, so insignificant. I think you feel like love is conditional. You tried so hard to be perfect and he still still couldn't love you the way a father should. Repay your efforts with cruel words until well...until you and your mother had enough. Frankly it doesn't matter whether or not he ever laid a hand on you. He did just as much damage if not more with his words."

He held my hands, "You are so damn strong love. Even after all that, you still put yourself out there and let yourself be loved. You've done so much work to heal those wounds. I-I know it doesn't feel like it right now but you've come so far. I'm proud of you. I'm so proud of you. And nothing that happens can change how I feel. You, you are amazing. You rose from the ashes and I am in awe of the light inside you. The light he didn't and
could never extinguish."

He kissed my forehead, "My love is never conditional. You don't have to act a certain way or look a certain way or achieve a certain level of success to keep my love. I will never
tear you down. I will build you up. I will help you continue to grow." He looked at me, "Do you feel a little better?" I shook my head. He sighed, "No?" He laid me down on my side of the bed and turned out the lamp, "I think you can try and sleep."

I gripped his arm, "Hold me?" He nodded, laying down next to me, "Of course I'll keep holding you tonight and every night for the rest of our lives. I love you and tomorrow, I'll make you the happiest bride when
you make me the happiest man. I promise." He wrapped his arms around my waist, "Now, let's go to sleep love. You're safe."

With that, I fell into a peaceful sleep. Knowing I had Miles to keep me safe.
