04) a promise you can't keep

"-Stilinski, stop reminding me why I drink....every night." She heard Coach sigh before she walked into the classroom, surprising her favourite teacher.

"Harper! Good to have you back!" Coach commented and Maddie gave him a smile before taking her seat behind Stiles. "Does anyone else want to answer the question on the board?" Coach asked as Scott looked at Stiles in concern.

"I'm okay, I just fell asleep for a sec." Stiles breathed, his eyes flashing briefly at Maddie who had zoned out. "Dude...you weren't asleep." Scott stated, worry clear in his voice as Maddie finally looked up.

Scott nodded towards Stiles's paper and Maddie frowned as she couldn't see what it was that Scott was nodding to. That was until Stiles snuck the piece of paper to her.

Maddie's eyes widened as she saw a much bigger version of what she wrote on her arm, but on paper. "Yeah, we all need to talk." Maddie stated as she pulled up her sleeve, exposing the words she had written on her skin.

-_-_-_-_-

"Okay, so what happens to a person who has a near-death experience and comes out of it seeing things?" Scott questioned as he, Stiles, Maddie, Lydia, Allison and Isaac sat around the lunch table outside.

"-And is unable to tell what is real or not?" Stiles added, putting in his two cents. "-And is being hunted by demonic visions of dead relatives?" Allison asked, carrying on the chain and Maddie sighed.

"They're all locked up because they're insane." Isaac stated and Maddie shrugged. It was a fair point. "Ha. Can you at least try to be helpful, please?" Stiles questioned and Maddie sighed.

"For half my childhood I was locked in a freezer. So being helpful is kind of a new thing for me." Isaac snapped back causing Stiles to scoff as Scott dropped his head into his arms. "Okay, hey, dude, are you still milking that?" Stiles asked sarcastically, causing Maddie to huff impatiently.

"Yeah, maybe I am still milking that." Isaac replied before the Petrova snapped. "Okay, Isaac and Stiles. Both of you, shut the actual fuck up, please and thank you. Scott, lift your head out of your arms, we are not that problematic. Now, any ideas as to what the solution, or even the problem, is?" Maddie questioned, her voice hinting at how over it she was with everything.

"Hi." A new voice greeted causing the group to look up at the new girl. Recognising her as their History teacher's daughter, Maddie hid her concern with a smile.

"Sorry, I couldn't help overhearing what you guys were talking about..." the girl trailed off causing the group to share worried glances. "And I think I actually might know what you're talking about." She finished and the group looked between each other.

"There's a Tibetan word for it, it's called "bardo". It literally means "in-between state", the state between life and death." She stated, all the while she was talking, Maddie raised an eyebrow at Lydia who tilted her head before the two girls looked up at the new girl.

"And what do they call you?" Lydia questioned and Maddie smirked the tiniest bit as all three girls raised their eyebrows and tilted their heads. "Kira." Scott cut in, knowing how rude the three could be. Although, he also knew that if Caroline were there, his head would be on a wooden pike.

The whole group looking at him with wide eyes, or confused looks, except Maddie— who's eyes narrowed. Caroline Forbes was her best friend, always, and the blonde told her that she and the Alpha has gotten together the same week she was away.

"She's in our history class." Scott explained, a hint of fear in his voice as he held eye contact with Maddie. The Petrova Hybrid also noticed the blush on Kira's cheeks as well as the smitten smile, and she knew that in order to protect Caroline and Scott from heartbreak, there would be no more kind smiles.
