Chapter Forty-Eight

"Tobias, what are you doing?" I added, leaning forward a little bit as if they would help me hear through whatever he was doing over there.

"Eating," he said simply, and I heard him stuff more food in his mouth. I grimaced at the noise and shook my head at my older bother's childishness.

"You know dad's rule about phones at the table", I hissed. "How are you getting away with it?" I asked, genuinely confused but what I was hearing from the other end of the line.

"I don't have my phone at the table. I know how strict dad is with that rule as much as you do," he said, confusing me even further. "I'm up in my room." I open my mouth to speak but he spoke again before I could even get a word out. "Just let me explain." There was a moment of silence before he spoke again. "Okay, so, I have big news," he said.

"Just get on with it, Tobias," I snapped angrily. I pulled the phone away form my face and covered the speaker. "And will you two shut up! I'm on the phone." I yelled at Shima and Rin who were yelling nonsense about he video game back and forth at each other. I sighed and ran a hand through my hair. "Sorry, Tobias. Continue. Just get to the point, please."

"Got it," he said. "Mio wants a temptaint." I was taken aback by Tobias' forwardness, but I had told him to get to the point. Normally, he wasn't very good at that. He liked to tell stories. "I don't know, she just blurted it out at dinner tonight, and then she and dad started arguing. I left before it got explosive," he explained.

"Understandable," I muttered, running a hand through my hair again anxiously.

"But I guess we'll just have to wait to see what dad says, but I can't see him letting her go through with it," he said, and I couldn't help but be worried. Dad was stubborn, but so was Mio. That argument could go on for a while. I voiced my concerns to my brother. "Yeah," he said through a sigh. "I guess we'll have to wait and see," he repeated. I knew hat was the only think we could really do at this point.

I felt a hand on my back and turned to see that Ryuji was now sitting up, a concerned look on his face. "Is everything all right?" he whispered. I glanced over to see Shima and Run looking at me expectantly as well. They were as close as family so I couldn't find it in me to be mad at their eavesdropping. They were fighting along side of me through this entire ordeal. They deserved to know. I nodded, telling Ryuji I was alright before returning my attention to my brother who had gone silent on the other side of the line.

"Tobias, if there's something more going, please just tell me. You're making me nervous," I pleaded, anxiety bubbling up in the pit of my stomach, threatening to make me loose control. I heard Tobias sigh through the phone.

"Yeah, there is," he said through a breath. My anxiety and frustration had built up and it was getting ready to explode. There had been so much just absolute shit going on in my life, and I really didn't need anymore stress. First, Tobias had stressed me out about dad and Mio. There was no doubt that there was going to be a huge argument, and there was no telling where it could lead. And now, Tobias was trying to skirt around subjects instead of just coming out a saying it. I didn't really care about how hard this information was to relay, but I was tired of waiting anxiously for important news.

"Would you cut the crap and just tell me, Tobias?" I snapped harshly. "I'm exhausted and tired of waiting anxiously for you to tell me something important," I all but yelled into the phone. There was silence on the other side of the line. I sighed and put my head in my hand. I felt a strong hand between my shoulders, rubbing small comforting circles into my tense muscles, trying to calm me.

"Okay, okay, I'm sorry, (Y/N), truly, I am," Tobias said, her voice sounding nothing but sincere. I took a deep breath and let it out. I heard Tobias do something on the other end of the line. "Dad and Mio got engaged," Tobias said bluntly, causing my jaw to drop. I saw Ryuji look at me funny out of the corner of my eye, but I ignored him, trying to wrap my head around this startling news.

"And they told you but not me?" I spluttered. I wasn't even upset that they got engaged. If this is what made them happy and if they thought this was the best for all of us, then I needed to trust their judgement. My father would never do something if he wasn't absolutely sure about it. I was more upset that they hadn't told me.

"No, no, (Y/N)," Tobias rushed immediately. "Mio let it slip out during their little argument before I left. They would never tell me and not you. You know dad's not like that. You know that," he reminded me. And I did know that.

"Yeah, yeah, I know," I muttered into the phone. "It's just a lot to take in right now with everything going on," I explained.

"I understand, (N/N). But with everything going on, maybe this is what we need," he said. I couldn't help but agree. With all of this nightmare that had been going on, this was a little bit of happiness and hope in a life of darkness.

Suddenly, I found myself smiling widely. I had to admit, I haven't seen my father so happy in such a long time. After seeing him with Mio, it was like a whole different person. "Yeah, maybe it is," I said, suddenly feeling very giddy. We talked for a few minutes before we bid our respective farewells.

I sighed and let my phone drop to the floor with a soft thud. "Are you alright?" Ryuji asked form behind me. I nodded and crawled back up on the couch and into my boyfriend's lap. I sat with my back against his chest, feeling his stomach move up and down as he took steady breaths. I quickly told my boyfriend what had transpired over the phone with my brother. Run and Shima listen eagerly, but I didn't mind. I didn't want to keep anything from them. They had showed in the past that they truly cared about me and I for them.
