“Megan, you don’t know anything about him.”

She didn’t say anything. She probably got the hint that this was serious. I was calling her Megan instead of her usual ‘Meg’.

“Well, we know he has poison on him.”

 “That might’ve been someone else.”

“He was the only one at that table, Liam! I really don’t think Nicola would do that to her own flesh and blood!”

“Good point. Why do you think he did that?”

“Haven’t figured that out yet.” She mumbled tiredly. She ran a hand through her hair, groaning out loud.

“You okay?” I asked, quickly pulling up into the hospital and finding a parking spot. She nodded a bit then grabbed Logan as quickly as she could. She rushed into the hospital, not even waiting up for me.

 She was desperate.

She was a mother. If she lost Logan . . . I shook my head, not even able to fathom the thought of losing my first nephew.

 My only nephew.

I carried Ellie inside, careful not to drop her limp body. Paramedics immediately took her from me, strapping her down onto a stretcher and calling her name, trying to bring her out of her unconscious state. Tears finally fell and they didn’t stop, no matter how hard I tried. Meg flung herself into my arms, as I stared off, wrapping my arms around her. They carried my baby sister and my only nephew away. I wanted to go with them, hold their hands as they were pushed down the hallway, whispering words to them they’d never hear. They wouldn’t let me pass though. I was tempted to use the famous ‘Do you know who I am?!” line, but I didn’t. That’d be rude.

I sunk into one of the cold hospital chairs with Meg. I just looked at her for a second, then she looked back at me. There was so much pain in her eyes, I felt like crying even more.

“Why?” She croaked out. “W-Why?” She kept mumbling until I finally pulled her closer to me. She sobbed into my chest, beginning to sound hysteric now. She was hiccuping like crazy as her fragile body shook.

 “I promised,” She kept whispering. “I p-promised.”

“Megan,” I said, trying to snap her out of it. I shook her a bit as she gripped my shirt tightly. I didn’t try to pry her off. I let her cling on to me. It seemed to comfort her.

“I p-p-promised in the delivery r-room to my kids. I-I’d make sure t-their childhood w-would never be a-as bad as m-m-mine.” She wiped her tears away, cries turning into little sniffles. Her nose was a bit red and running. I gave her a tissue, cleaning up her face like she was a child. “Liam, I promised. I w-would protect t-them and-” She sighed in defeat, looking at the ground, lip quivering and eyes watering. She shook her head over and over again. “I-I broke my p-promise.” Her voice trembled, breaking my heart.

“Megan, it’s going to be all right.” I engulfed her into a big hug, kissing her forehead. My own tears feel down and landed on her head. I tried not to cry to much. I had to be strong for her. She didn’t hug me back so I knew she didn’t believe me. “Meg. Megan. Smile. Come on. Don’t make me tickle you.” I pulled out of our hug, taking my fingers and pushing the corners of her mouth up. She laughed a bit and forced a smile. “I don’t like seeing my wittle sista all sad.” I teased, pinching her cheek. She rolled her eyes.

“I’m not that little.” She pouted, looking up at me with her big eyes.

“You’ll always be my little sister.” She snuggled up against me as we waited in the hospital chair. I started to play with her hands, intertwining them and pulling on her fingers. She kept giving me weird looks, but I found it funny. I started to crack her knuckes but she freaked out and yanked her hand away from me, screaming a bit.

 “OW!” She cried out. “Meanie.”

 “Baby.”

She smacked my arm and I laughed. “You hit like a girl.”

“You would know.”

“Good old Meg’s back.” I laughed a bit.

She smiled lightly, adding a little shrug. “I guess. I’m still very nervous though. I don’t wanna lose anybody else. I can’t afford it. I just can’t.”
