August had a mean ass stepmom growing up, she controlled his dad and made him choose her over his son. Aug eventually moved out to live with his grandmother for a while.
Leslie and his father got a divorce a couple years after that, and she just stayed in touch with August after the divorce.

Later that day August picked up key and they headed to the other side of town to have dinner with Leslie.

Key knew Leslie because her and August grew up on the same street. She was living with her grandma and she had friends that lived on that street. She also cheered for August when he played football and Leslie just happened to be the coach of the cheerleading team.
Key never found out about how Leslie would treat August until they got older and start hanging back out
