"I smile all the time so that nobody knows how sad and lonely I am"

Jane's P.O.V

Here I am in my office listening to Arie blab about her boyfriend's behavior.

"I don't understand Roy, he's acting weird lately. I think he's cheating... oh he better not get caught if I lay my hands on that good-for-nothing bastard. God knows what I'll do. Jane... Jane are you even listening, you're just sitting there quiet and lost in your world" She said sighing.

"Jane... Jane!" She snapped. I twirled my head to look at her. "Uh, oh I'm sorry I..I just... you know" I cleared my throat and let out a deep breath.

"Arie, I'm sorry. I heard what you said but just couldn't... respond. I was thinking" She looked at me and shook her head. "It's okay I understand. I'll come back when you're in the mood to talk" She said with a bit of an attitude.

I stood up from my comfortable chair and walked towards her.

"Arie, I'm sorry I didn't listen very well, but I understand you. I know you are feeling some kind of way about Roy's behavior. Don't just jump to conclusions, okay? Maybe he is dealing with something, and he wants to keep to himself for a while. Give him some time, Okay?" She nodded.

"I promise you everything is going to be fine, you guys are going to be okay" I tried to reason with her. She let out a sigh of relief.

"You know what... you're right. I don't need to think that far. When I get home I'll sit him down and we'll talk... yeah just talk. That's what I'm gonna do" I smiled and she returned my smile.

"That's the spirit, sweetheart. Okay, let's get back to work, and we'll go out for lunch later." I said bringing a smile to her face as walked out of my office.

I returned to my chair and continued working.

I work for a big corporation owned by the Greenwood family. The headquarters is located in New York. I currently work for one of their branches located in Chicago as the head of the Information Technology department. As a former college student, I majored in Information Technology with a minor in business. As a graduate student, I mastered technology management.

Let's just say I worked my butt off to be where I am today and I do deserve my pay. Even though I had to work three times harder as a young black woman.

I'm just a normal girl living her simple life.

Everyone has a story to tell, and I have mine. I can save my story for another day.

I heard my phone ring in my purse stopping my train of thought. I stood up to fetch my purse in the hope of getting my phone on time. My smart self forgot to check the caller ID before picking up.

There are lots of calls I try to avoid, but I guess luck is on her side today.

"Hello," I heard my mom's strong British accent. "Hey... Mom, how are you doing... How is London? Hope all is well?" I asked in a friendly manner, trying not to get scolded.

"Oh hey, honey. Everything is fine and London is London" She said and I chuckled. "I just wanted to hear your voice honey that's why I called. I miss you" She said.

Even though I don't believe that's why she's calling, I know it is part of it. And of course, I miss my mom. I haven't seen her face-to-face in years.

"I miss you too Mom. I promise to visit you next summer. I promise" I said hopefully.

"I hope so. I know you're always busy Jane, and I understand." She said reading my mind.

"But baby, you need to live your life and enjoy it while you can honey. You're still young and beautiful. You worked hard and studied while you were in school. I know you didn't have time to party or enjoy that part of college, because of your studies and everything. Sweetie, you need to get out there, party with your girlfriends, and have fun. Go out with someone, go on a date or something, it is time to move on baby. Forget the past, let the past be the past, and live your present, not your past Jane. Please I'm begging you_" I didn't let her finish before I cut in.

I knew she was gonna say all this over and over again like every other day.

"Mom I get it. You want me to move on right? Okay, I'll move on. I already did, it's just that I'm too busy for that, okay?" She sighed.

"Your answer is not going to change, is it? You keep repeating the same thing over and over again. When are you going to listen to us and MOVE ON" She emphasized the word move on. I sighed shaking my head while looking for a way to get out of the conversation.

"Mom! Mom... I'll call you back. I have a meeting right now and it's urgent" I said quickly faking an emergency.

"Don't you dare hang up that phone Jane Mia Collins. That's what you said the last time we had this conversation_" I didn't let her finish before I hung up.

Shoot! She caught me this time. I need to find another excuse.

I stood on the same spot tapping my foot, thinking.

Arie entered my office without knocking, snapping me out of my thoughts.

"Jane your attention is needed immediately! There's an urgent meeting. It is really important!"

Wow! Looks like I predicted the future.
