Chapter 2: Surprise Inspections

"Hey Cole" Sawyer said giggling at her glowing brother. "Look!" Colton yelled showing his older sister a piece of paper. She looked to see a drawing "Its you and me" he explained. Sawyer nodded "It's beautiful" Colton smiled at her approval and turned to see Atlas

"Hey little man" Atlas greeted ruffling the kids hair, Colton glared at the older boy making them all laugh

Back at the Jameson family unit Sawyer found herself alone with Colton seeing as her parents were both taking extra shifts at work. This was normal for the 2, they spent most of their time alone together leaving Sawyer to raise Colton 

"Colton, finish" Sawyer instructed annoyed at the little boy who spent more time giggling then he did eating. The door to their unit slid open and Atlas came tumbling in panting as he fell to the floor. Sawyer stood up confused as she watched her best friend scramble to stand 

"Surprise inspection" Atlas breathed out as he slammed on the button closing the door. Colton jumped up in fear and Atlas ran around grabbing the boys things. Sawyer rushed over to her mattress lifting up to show a hatch. She twisted the knob and opened the door revealing a hole in the floor 

"Ok, in here like we practiced" Sawyer said as she pointed to the hole. Atlas came over throwing the boy's things inside Colton looked to the girl tears in his eyes

"Colton, no not now like we practiced" Sawyer said shaking her head as she wiped the tears from his eyes. He nodded and took a deep breath before lowering his body into the floor. Sawyer kissed his head before closing the door and dropping the mattress. She rubbed on the sheets pushing them down

Loud bangs were heard startling them

"Sit, sit" Atlas rushed as he pulled out a chair for the young girl. Sawyer looked up to see one of Colton's stuffed animals on the table. She reached forward throwing it in her lap as the bangs continued. Atlas and Sawyer picked up the forks and pretended they were eating 

Eventually the door was forcefully slid open. Guards filled the room ready to fight before calming down seeing as it was 2 kids who clearly looked afraid "Oh, I'm sorry there's a surprise inspection" a guard informed

Sawyer nodded and the guards started looking around lifting up sheets and belongings 

"Boy" a guard called out causing the kid's heads to lift up "There's a guards interest meeting next week for any young teens interested in becoming a guard" 

Atlas nodded Sawyer felt her heart stop as a guard moved things around from her mattress. A sigh slowly escaped her lips seeing the guard move on

Once they were done they apologized again before leaving. Sawyer instantly rushed over lifting the mattress and letting her brother out of their hiding spot. She pulled him up and into her arms "It's ok" she comforted 

He nodded and Atlas bent down hugging boy as well "We're safe" Sawyer said looking at her little brother who she had sworn to protect

Sawyer's Age:15 (Just turned)
Atlas's Age: 17
Colton's Age:9

Atlas slammed his hands down on the table throwing the cards making Sawyer burst out laughing. Colton threw a ball against the wall annoyed at his 2 'babysitters' who spent more time together then they did entertaining him

"That's it, your freaking cheating" Atlas said in disbelief as he stared at the blonde who just smiled at him. She just shrugged smirking at him making Atlas' heart beat like crazy. DIstant banging shook the 2 out of their moment as they jumped up
