Ode to Nietzsche

Staring down into the abyss
I ponder what I could possibly miss
I cannot stand what I can see
As it is the abyss staring back into me

How can I escape this stranglehold
Which feeds the young and kills the old
I stare on forever without blinking
The abyss lies there silently thinking

I hear growling and know there comes a fight
I resist becoming a monster with all my might
I look below as the abyss ebbs and swells
Terror of things to come inside of me wells

As I descend through clouds to see clearly
I stop at a vantage just as I've grown weary
Finally I realized from the edge where I sat
That the abyss is a mirror polished and flat
