Chapter 20 - Asking Questions in Korean

Have you ever tried asking questions in korean? Some of you may have and some may have not.

Asking questions in korean is pretty easy. Kasi diba pag sa english, nagdadagdag na tayo ng did you.. Do you.. Are you... Something like that? Sa korean kasi, yung statement ay magiging question pag lalagyan mo ng question mark, or pag iniba mo ang tono ng boses mo.

Ex.

재연은 밥을 먹었다. - Jaeyeon ate.

재연은 밥을 먹었다? - Did Jayeon eat?

O diba. Pero siyempre hindi pa jan nagtatapos. Maraming ways na gumawa ng question sa korean.

Another example is the common question: 뭐 해? (What are you doing?)

Let me introduce to you 니 and 냐.

니 and 냐 can be attached to verbs.

니 and 냐 have the same meaning, kaso may iba-ibang gamit.

니 is more of a feminine feel, and mas mild kesa 냐.

냐 is more impolite than 니 and more of males ang gumagamit.

Remember, these are very casual particles. Meaning bastos kayo pag gagamitin niyo to sa nakakatanda o someone na hindi mo ka close. So nagagamit lang ito sa close friends mo and people younger than you.

Ex.

뭐해? ---> 뭐하니? (What are u doing?)

Pwede rin 뭐하냐?

Ito, narinig kong sinabi ito ni kim tan kay cha eun sang: 혹시, 나 널 좋아하냐?

혹시 - perhaps/maybe

좋아하다 + 냐 question particle

혹시, 나 널 좋아하냐? - perhaps, do I like you?
"나 널 좋아해" could mean "i like you" as a statement. Pero pag in a question form siya, nagiging "i like you?" Parang ganoon.

Kung sa formal korean naman, gumagamit ng ~ㅂ니까, instead of ~ㅂ니다.

Ex.

재연이 밥을 먹었습니까? - did jaeyeon eat?

혹시, 나 널 좋아합니까? - perhaps, do i like you? (Weird sentence though, kasi sinong gagamit ng formal korean para magconfess sa isang tao? Lol)

at tamang tama! pasok na pasok dito yung mga linya sa Descendants of the Sun! remember this scene?

ito ang isa sa mga linya nila (yung naka bold):
어디 - where
가다 - go
어디 가십니까? - where are you going?
Sa natutunan natin sa itaas, ang informal way of saying this is:
어디 가니? / 어디가냐?

Adding 시 makes it more respectful. Ito ay ibang uri nanaman ng pagconjugate.
가다 = 가시다. (Formal way of saying "go")
오다 = 오시다
보다 = 보시다
And the list goes on.

또 -again
도망가다 - to run away
또 도망가십니까? - are you runnning away again?

Of course, everyone knows the famous line "Perhaps, do you like Messi?"
Pero ang pagkasabi nito ni 김복주 in Korean ay

혹시, 메시(를) 좋아하세요?

Ano nga ba ang 세요 (polite) na sentence ending? Tulad nung una kong example, ang sentence na ito ay pwede declarative kapag period ang masa dulo at hindi question mark.

메시(를) 좋아하세요. = You like Messi. (Or more precisely, "Gusto niyo po si Messi")
메시(를) 좋아해. = Gusto mo si Messi.

Ang pagdadagdag ng 세요 kapag nag tatanong ay para lamang maging formal at polite ang sentence. Kumbaga spoken version ng -ㅂ니까.

There are more question particles (idk what they are called basta particles sila na ginagamit lang sa interrogatve sentences). I am not familiar with all of them and in the long run kapag matutunan ko na rin sila, i-aadd ko dito ^_^
