CHAPTER 12

Jamaal woke up early the next morning and after greeting his elders he went to take a walk. He loved the cool morning air especially since after in 2 hours the sun will be fully out and the heat will be unbearable. It wasn't really quiet because its Yola and almost everyone woke up at the sound of the early crow. There were chickens everywhere so you couldn't even miss it. Still with the noise, it was quieter than the busy streets of London and even though he would trade the smell of the dung for the smell of morning coffee and baked goods. It was home. But somehow, his heart didn't lie there.

He bought some Nono from a pullo (Fulani woman that sells yoghurt (Nono) and drank to his fill. He left the fura in the cup though (millet). It was one of the things he hated since he was a child. Feeling refreshed, he entered the compound, and while walking to his mum's side he bumped into someone.

His eyes were as wide as saucers as he stared as Lailah. He totally forgot they were coming. Or he just hoped for it and believed it. She looked the same, except for the bare face except kohl. He loved kohl, and he always told her to wear it instead of her winged liner and Smokey eyes. That wasn't the only change. She was wearing trads (traditional wear (Ankara). It was heavily decorated. But beautiful.

'Hamma Jamaal' (Hamma is brother in Fulani) she looked down shyly. He couldn't even speak. Where did the Hamma come from? He was older than her with 5 years but never has he heard her call someone Hamma. Especially not him. And Lailah was nothing but shy. They broke up because of what she was. But here she was looking like his ideal wife.

'Lailah, nana do donama (nana is calling you)' the maid interrupted. No matter who Lailah was, she couldn't forget who nana was. She followed the maid hurriedly.

Still standing there, trying to figure what that was, Labeeb met a frozen Jamaal standing. From the look on his face, he knew he had met Lailah. He was on his way to warn him but didn't meet Jamaal in his room.

'Jamaal, he called out. When he didn't answer he nudged him.

'naaam, what?' Labeeb looked at his brother in pity. He knew how hard this was for him. Lailah brought back too many memories and few of them were good. He wondered whether to take his brother somewhere or leave him to himself. But he decided to take him out because this is the worst time for him to be alone. His brother really emotional and the thing he valued most was used against him. It broke him and he vowed to never let that happen again. He was going to protect his brother's heart no matter what.

'Where have you been, were all going to Sharif's place, his wedding is tomorrow. It's a bachelor party'

'Bachelor party, where, not in this state I hope' Jamaal was wide eyed and was starting to lighten up. Obviously the highest the party will go would be music and well, making Sharif feel bad he was going to get tied up. And the best will be food. Oh food!

He followed his brother and along with his cousins, all went to Sharif's house.

                                                                            xXx

Despite trying to forget everything, Jamaal just couldn't. It wasn't even the past that bothered him. Why won't she just leave him alone. What is she back for? What does she want? And why the hell was she dressed like that?

All these questions could only be answered by one person and he can't even ask the questions. He was scared of the answers.

'Hey, Jamaal are you thinking about getting a wife too?' he was nudged by his cousin. He guessed it was his turn to be teased.

'He just smiled and said no.

'Come on, you didn't like even one of those girls? I wish it were me' his cousin or so, he wasn't even sure said with his hand on his chest. It was Tahir. He wasn't a direct relative but they all grew up in the same house that until they were older, they didn't even know their real connection. Tahir was a womanizer. He loved women and spoke to almost all the women in not only Yola but the neighboring towns as well. He just wasn't ready to settle and to him he was testing.

Jamaal was tired so he called Labeeb and congratulated Sharif and they went home. Immediately they went in, he was summoned by Nana. He went in there and Lailah and her mom were there. After greeting them, he turned to his grandma.

'Jamaal, have you chosen a girl yet?'

'No nana, I've not met all of them yet'

'Nonsense, they are all the same so it won't make a difference. So I've made a choice for you. Lailah here is looking for a husband and she has turned to a lovely girl. I hear you've liked each other in the past. So you'll work out just fine.'

Jamaal froze. He did not see this coming, he just said his salaam and went back to his room. He performed Salah and asked Allah for help. As he was folding his mat, his eyes landed on the letter again. As he read through the contents again, he decided. He was going to go away for those 6 months. No matter what. He couldn't deal with anything and had to get his head straight. Even that girl could wait. For the first time in his life, he decided to shut everything out and think for himself. And he was going to do that. T was about time.

Labeeb saw the determination in his brother's eyes and as he said 'I'm going' he knew it was done. He hoped for his brother's sake that he will find love away from this place and find it true and within those 6 months.

Intense huh? What do you think of Lailah?

Do you think she changed?

What do you think fate has in store for Jamaal?

Any predictions?
