The doors of the kitchen burst open suddenly and Wren's head snapped around to see Rhys standing on the threshold, staring from her to the vampire and back, his golden topaz eyes wide with surprise. Taking advantage of her distraction, the vampire formed five more fireballs and sent them flying her way. Wren reacted immediately, almost instinctively, and used the wind to shield herself. Catching Rhys' startled gaze, she screamed at him through the blazing fire.
"Don't just stand there and ogle, you idiot!" Wren snarled at him, blocking another attack. "He's trying to claim me as his pet! HELP ME!"
At those words, his molten gold eyes bleached to a deep, coal-black as he released a deep feral snarl that chilled her blood and stopped her heartbeat. Rhys launched himself across the room and onto the back of the unsuspecting vampire. A high- pitched keening sound filled the burning room and assaulted Wren's strangely sensitive ears as Rhys began ripping the vampire apart piece by piece...
