Part 72

"Come on!" I call back as i run towards the nearest high-rise building that is two blocks away from my apartment.

"June!" Day calls from somewhere behind me in the alley.

The whole area seems deserted. Nobody in their proper senses would be up this early. Its ten minutes past three a.m. in the morning.

I turn around.

Day has stopped forty metres behind me, bending forward, hands resting on his knees, breathing heavily.

"You okay?" I ask as i run back to him.

"Yeah, i'm good." He smiles as he sees me approaching. "Just out of practice." He says between breaths.

"Are you sure you want to do this?" I ask suddenly unsure of the whole idea.

"Yeah. I want to do this." He replies. Upon seeing my worried expression, he continues, "I just need a little warming up. Give me ten minutes."

"Okay. You'd tell me if you aren't upto it, right?" I ask.

"Yeah. Promise." He lightly taps on my nose.

I wait and watch him do some stretching exercises.

I realise that he looks slightly buff than he looked ten years ago. Now he looks like an older, more stronger version of Day.

I am still debating if the idea is crazy.

Forty minutes ago, after we had woken up next to each other, this was how this crazy idea had come up.

"June, tell me about our first kiss." Day had asked me.

"Um... I wasn't... your first kiss." I had replied. "It was an older girl from the lake sector..."

"Oh." He had said. Clearly embarrassed. "But tell me about OUR first kiss. Not mine or yours."

Then i had told him about the night i met him and Tess after the skiz fight. Our first kiss that night in the alley.

"Our first kiss was in an alley?" He had asked guiltily.

"Yes. It was the best kiss of my life." I had said honestly.

When he had looked satisfied with my answer, i had told him, "You know, there had been a rumour that you once scaled a five stories building in less than eight seconds."

"Really?" He had looked surprised.

Then i had told him about how i had gotten into trouble at Drake's for leaving campus to scale a skyscraper. How i was pulled up by three helicopters after scaling fourteen stories in six minutes and forty-four seconds. We had laughed together when i told him how Metias had come to my rescue.

"Wish i could do that now." I had said.

"We could do that, you know." Day had said suddenly sitting up.

"No..." I had been unsure.

"How about we do this together?" He had kissed me then to remove all my doubts.

It was really tempting. I couldn't refuse him.

So here we are, on our way to the nearest skyscraper.

Day finishes his warming up and comes to stand at my side.

"Ready?" He asks flexing his muscles.

I nod. "On count of three."

"One. Two. Three."

We run side by side.

Things are flashing by so fast, it feels as if we are gliding.

We don't stop when we reach the nineteen-stories skyscraper, the highest building in the area.

We start scaling up its side.

Together.

We climb around the first floor.

Then setting our footing on the ledge of first floor, we climb the second floor.

We keep climbing floor after floor until we're almost to the roof.

I grab the top ledge, gather all my strength and pull.

When i safely reach over the edge, i whirl around to see Day leaping onto the roof.

I lie down, Day follows my suit.

Taking deep breaths, we start laughing.

"We did it!" I say hysterically.

"Yeah. How long?" Day breathes out.

"Eight minutes and sixteen seconds."

"Ha! That must be a record in itself." Day says.

I roll into him and put my head on his shoulder.

The sun's not up yet.

We stare at the sky, exhausted. None of us is in a position to talk. We lie there for the rest of the morning, bathing in the soothing light of breaking dawn.
