Tony

Love wasn't a familiar feeling for me. It was always a foreign subject. Something that I never understood. Until now.

She's the specks of light that peeks through the cracks in a dark room. My heart was dark and lifeless before I found the love of my life.

She's not just any woman. She's my soulmate. She's the reason I wake up in the morning.

She's the last thought I have before I go to sleep and my first thought when I wake up.

Waking up beside her every morning is paradise on its own.

Valeria stirred in my arms. I looked down at the brunette beauty and watched as her eyes fluttered open.

"Well, hello."

She smiled at me.

"How long have I been asleep?"

"Five hours. We're about 25 minutes away."

She nodded.

I placed my hand on her round belly.

"I'm fat, aren't I?"

"No. You've never been more beautiful."

"I like this Tony. The romantic Tony."

"This trip is just us. We're turning off all devices and we're going to enjoy each other."

"I like that idea, but what if you get called into work or if it's an emergency?"

"It will wait. You are my only focus right now."

"Really?"

"I want to show you how much I love you."

We pulled up in the driveway of my rustic cabin.

I got out the car and rushed to Valeria's side. I helped her out the car.

I led her through the double wooden doors of my cabin.

It was exactly as I left it.

I haven't been here since I found out that my parents were murdered.

"Tony, it's beautiful."

I grabbed our bags and we both went to the bedroom.

We both unpacked and when we were finished, we realized we were hungry.

We went to the kitchen.

"Isn't all that food old?"

"Don't worry. I had someone stock the fridge while you were sleeping."

She nodded. She pulled out a tub of Rocky Road, a box of Cocoa Puffs and a tomato.

"That's disgusting."

"It's all I've been thinking about all day."

I grabbed a beer, water and a banana.

Valeria dug in the ice cream. She poured some cereal in it and ate them together.

I chuckled and wiped her mouth.

She took a bite out of the tomato.

"Do you want some salt with that?"

"Nope, but I'll take the water."

I handed her the water, before taking a sip of my beer.

"I miss alcohol so much. I just want a tall glass of wine."

"You just have to wait 2 more months."

I grabbed her hand and took her to the couch. I kissed her belly.

"I'm ready to see her."

"Me too. I'll be 28 weeks tomorrow."

"She's going to be so beautiful."

"I hope she's just like you."

"I hope not.", I whispered.

That's the last thing I want. I want my daughter to be the exact opposite of me. An angel.

"What do you mean?"

"Valeria, I've killed people. I'm a cold-blooded killer. I've lied and I've hurt the people I love. I'm a terrible person."

"Tony, you're a hero. You saved me from Alexei. You saved my soul from the darkness and let in some light. You're sitting beside me, trying to save our relationship. You're one of the greatest people I know. I killed Alexei, but that doesn't determine my worth."

"I love you so much, Valeria."

"I love you too."

I stood up and helped her off the couch.

She wrapped her arms around me.

"Kiss me.", she whispered.

I chuckled and leaned down to kiss her.

I deepened the kiss as I tried to pull her closer.

"Tony."

I smiled into the kiss.

I felt her place her hands on my chest. She began pushing me away.

"I'm sorry, Val-."

"No, my body hurts really bad."

"Do you need to go to the hospital?"

"I think so."

I called my driver and he pulled the car to the front.

I carried her to the car. I told the driver to rush to the hospital.

"Tony.", she sobbed.

I held her closer to me.

It was killing me, knowing that there was nothing I could do to take away the pain.

We arrived at the hospital.

I picked Valeria up bridal-style and rushed her through the double doors.

"Please, help us. My fiancé is in pain. She's 7 months pregnant."

"Sir, calm down."

A nurse rushed to us and placed Valeria in a wheelchair. I followed behind them.

We were brought to a large room. I helped Valeria into the gown that was handed to her.

"So, Miss Bout, can you tell me some of your symptoms?"

"It's like this pain that keeps coming and going."

"How often do the pains come?"

"About every 10 minutes, I think."

"Miss.Bout, I think you may be in labor. I understand that you're only 7 months pregnant, so we're going to give you some medication to try and stop your water from breaking. Unfortunately, if your water does break, then we will have to deal with a critically premature birth."

He exited the room as if he didn't just tell us unsettling information.

"Tony, I'm scared. What if the baby doesn-."

"Don't think like that. If she comes, then she will be the healthiest and happiest baby. We can do this."

She nodded and bit her lip.

I kissed her forehead as the doctor returned.

He filled up a bag that was connected to a IV and was preparing to insert it into her hand.

Valeria began sobbing.

"It's going to be okay."

"No, it's not."

"Why would you say that?"

"My water just broke."

Fuck.
