A man sat in the cool, quiet living room in his home. His door had been locked, closed after sending his client home for the night. He breathed in and out, waiting for his next patient.

The man scratched the stubble that invaded his chin, sighing softly as he looked through the front window. He could see the Mayor's mansion across the village, far from his reach. He closed his eyes, the touch of sleep bringing the heaviness in his eyes down to his toes.

His eyes flicked open, paranoia toying with his mind as he stood autonomously. He made his way to the bedroom, stripping the bedsheets and talking them to the laundry room to wash them.

He sat on the floor, handing-washing the sheets from corner to corner. He was a perfectionist, meticulously scrubbing the bedding over and over. He was unable to see past the stains of blood, thinning the sheets as he continued to rake them.

He took his time in sterilizing them, cleaning them with a soft detergent before bleaching them and washing them once more. He repeated his process until his hands tingled, the sweat dripping down his brow and onto the floor in front of him.

Once he had his fill, the man stood and returned to the bedroom. He had converted it into his office, allowing patients to spend the night as he cared for their needs. He took pride in saving lives, keeping his diploma above the bedframe as he took patients under the knife.

He returned his gaze to the Mayor's house, exhaling sharply. That man had cut a large portion of funding for the town hospital, which had brought him to this wretched place in the village. He now worked undercover, taking in patients who were ambushed during the middle of the night and in danger of losing their lives.

The man saw a figure dart into the town, grabbing his attention. He rushed to the living room, gazing out the window to see that a young woman was standing in front of the first house. He watched her closely, holding his breath as he saw her enter the building. He looked back towards the empty bedroom, the scent of freshly-cleaned, sterile sheets filling his nostrils.

She would be safe here, but god-forbid if anyone came to harm her.
