Chapter 19 ~ Gone

  I pick up the phone in Grandpa's study, dialing the home number, praying that Rory will be the one to answer the phone.

  "Hello?" Rory's timid voice squeaks.

  "Hey, Rory, it's me."

  She doesn't say anything.

  "Rory?"

  "Where did you go?" she shouts, muttering 'oops' right after before clearing her throat. "Mom's really worried about you."

  "Why does she even care?" I mutter, playing with a notepad on the desk. 

  "That doesn't matter. She wants you home."

  I don't say anything. 

  "Callie?"

  "Why did you call me earlier? If Mom wants me home, she can talk to me herself." I scoff.

  "Because we had a fight too." she says sheepishly.

  "Wait what?"

  "Yeah, I came home and told her something. Then she got pissed, and we fought. I figured you'd run to Grandma and Grandpa. I think she was even more mad then she should've been." Rory explains.

  "Probably because of me." I sigh. "Sorry she took it out on you."

  "Not completely."

  "What did she get mad about? What did you tell her?" I question. 

  "Well," she starts. "I told her about Dean."

  "That you like him?"

  "No, that we're sort of together."

  I gasp. "What?"

  "I know I know. I should've told you sooner, maybe before Mom."

  "No, Rory, I'm happy for you."

  "At least someone is." she mutters.

  "Rory?"

  "Yeah?"

  "Remember Asher?"

  "Yeah.." she says suspiciously. "What about him?"

  "Well, he's coming over in a few days."

  "Oh, cool. Why?"

  "Oh stop it, Rory! You already know, don't you?!"

  "Know what?" she says innocently.

  "Ugh. You're going to make me say it aren't you?" I groan.

  "Say what??"

  I scoff. "Man, you should be an actress. Asher and I are together."

  She squeals. "Really?!"

  "Oh stop it already!" I laugh.

  "Hey, I got you laughing, that's a first."

  "Yeah."

  "Callie?"

  "Yeah?"

  "I think we need a little time away."

  I chuckle. "From what?"

  "From Mom.."

  I immediately become serious. "What? Rory.."

  "I know, but it's my job to take care of you. Especially since Mom is obviously going through something. We could stay with Grandma and Grandpa if you want. We just need to be somewhere for a while until things cool down with Mom." she suggests reasonably.
