Okay so Philip is in an abusive relationship but a few months into it he meets and befriends George. They hit it off and become really close.
They both have a crush on each other but neither will act on it cos Pip has a boyfriend. George has never met said boyfriend and Pip doesn't talk about him much, but one day he sees the pair talking and accuses Pip of cheating on him. He's yelling right in his face and then he slaps Philip, so George intervenes and scares him away. Philip breaks up with him over the phone and doesn't hear from him again.
The two get together and a few months later, Philip turns 21 and goes to a bar with some friends to celebrate. Now that he can legally drink, he decides to have a bit of alcohol. Just a bit.
He gets fucking pissed. Hammered. Trollied. Smashed. Mortal. All the British slang words for drunk I can think of.
George didn't drink because growing up, he saw how it made his father alternate between sad and violent. So, he stays sober and by Pip's side, but when he leaves to go to the toilet, Philip's abusive ex boyfriend shows up and starts harassing him. George comes back and full on punches the guy when he sees what's going on, then takes Philip- who is a wreck at this point- home to his parents.
Pip never really mentioned the full extent of what happened between him and his ex, so all George knew was that it sometimes lead to slaps, as that's is all he saw. Clearly, it was much more serious, he realises. Philip, drunk and sobbing, breaks down and spills the whole story, about how the dude regularly beat and once even raped him, but he stayed with him because after every time, he would apologise. Also, he was terrified of him.
Anyway long story short he makes George stay with him and basically spends the rest of the night alternating between crying and telling George how much he loves him until he falls asleep in his arms.
