Two Puzzle Pieces (Ch 26)

Start from the beginning

We had just taken a break from talking, my mind finally content with the answers. To be honest all I wanted to know is just the basics, but Jake offered me even more than that to which I was grateful. I sighed in content, and laced my hands on top of his where they were rested at my sides, his arms crossing over my stomach. I felt his soft lips plant a gentle kiss on my ear lobe and I giggled in response at the tickle.

“Hey Luce,” His voice was calm and even as he whispered this in my ear.

“Hm.” I replied, feeling so comfortable and content in my spot I didn’t want to move and inch.

“There’s another important thing I need to tell you.”

At this I turned around in his arms, my head still resting on his pillow and looked up at him. He was leaning his weight on his forearm and looking back down at me. His face was different than before when he was telling me about the werewolf facts. Before, his face was serious and nervous as he divulged the details of who he was. But now, his gaze was so.. intensely passionate- it almost cut through me. It was like he was trying to see into my soul and that intrigued memore than the werewolf stuff.

“What is it?” I questioned, my hand going up into his hair and to the back of his head.

“It’s about us.” He simply stated, and at this I felt my heart do mini jumps. “I’m actually surprised you didn’t bring it up first.” His eyes traveled down to the bed sheet nervously.

Now my heart was going insane. Was he backing out of this? Was it too weird? Too awkward? My paranoia was quickly setting in as I sat up, leaning my shoulders and head on the headboard. Jake stayed in the same position, kind of hovering over my side.

“It’s just—“

I found myself cutting him off, my hands now resting on my stomach as I played with my ring. “You think it’s awkward don’t you? You’re trying to let me down gently? You—“

His face was contorted in the most confused way before he quickly stopped me. “Let you down?! Lucy.. no.” He reassured, taking my hand and chuckling softly. “It’s definitely not that.”

My eyebrows crinkled as I waited for his explanation. He continued his laugh and reached out his other hand to smooth over my forehead. “Don’t look so worried.”

I didn’t know what to do so I just stayed silent, still waiting. The suspense was killing me.

“Being a werewolf makes certain.. things happen to us.” He began, already struggling to find the right words. “I-I guess you can say it makes every more amplified and intense.”

“Okaaaay” I nodded slowly, having no idea where this conversation is going.

“And um. Well. Okay. You know Jared and Kim?”

It was my turn to laugh. “Yes, I know them.”

He joined and looked down, rubbing his face with his hand. “Okay. Scratch that. Well.. I mean..”

“Jake.” I interrupted his struggle. “You’re killing me here.”

“It’s called imprinting.” He randomly let out, his eyes holding my gaze.

It took a little bit for this to register. “.. What?”

“Every werewolf during some time in their life has to imprint. And that means finding a.. mate if you will.” He began the explanation.

“And imprinting is finding a.. mate?” Imprinting? What the hell?

“Yes.” He nodded. “Except it’s so much more than that. Imprinting, Luce, is like.. fitting two puzzle pieces together, except you have no idea they’ll fit until you put them together.”

I nodded, finally understanding. “Okay. So what? You just fall in love right away? How do you know it’s her?.. or him?”

“Believe me, you know. Because as soon as your eyes set on her, that’s it. It just takes seeing her and you’re willing to do anything, be anything to make her happy. It’s more than just Love, Luce. It means that when you first see her.. she’s all you want. She’s all you want to please. She’s all you want to be with. She’s just.. a part of you.”

I stared at him, taking in every word and running it through my mind.. once.. twice.. even three times. I finally understood.

“And--- and, does she know.. when it happens?” I asked, remembering exactly that first time I saw Jake a few weeks ago and how it felt. I already knew the answer.

“You tell me.” He replied, his smile back on those perfect lips.

“I’m your imprint..er..ee.” I said it more as a statement than a question.

His low chuckle shook his chest as he looked down, his face getting closer to me. “Lucy Clearwater, you’re my imprint.”

If I thought my heart would burst when he said he loved me, then my heart must be long gone at this point. I felt a huge smile slide onto my face. I closed the space between us and pulled my imprinter down onto me, our lips together, his smile pressed against my mouth. I Love Jacob Black.
