A stack of neatly stapled
homework sheets are placed
in front of us, along with a pen.
Mei sits in the far right corner
and I sit in the left.
Miss Ingrid, the teachers
and our parents
stand at the front
and for a moment,
I think,
this feels like an execution.
But the thought doesn't linger
because Miss Ingrid pulls out a timer
and says,
"Are you ready girls?"
then sets it to 30 minutes.
The room fills with the sounds
of pens scribbling on paper.
