Chapter Nineteen

Down Pour

It has been raining since last night and just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, it started thundering. Cato and I had to move inside the cornucopia to stay dry. We're currently sitting near a fire to stay warm. It's really quiet besides the thunder every few minutes. I'm sure there's lightening too but I can't see outside. Being inside a metal thing probably isn't the best idea ever but there's no where else to go.

Cato has been staring off for hours now. He hasn't said a word or looked my way since he told me to wake up and go into here. I'm really starting to worry about him. He's usually so talkative and fun to be around. He's the complete opposite now. It feels like I'm sitting with a strange.

"Cato?"

"Hmm?"

"You okay?"

"Mhm."

I let out a sigh and lay on my back. He definitely isn't okay. I wish he would talk to me. Maybe I could help. I have a feeling that whatever is bothering him isn't something the Capital would enjoy hearing, though. Especially from a career tribute.

Soon, I'm being shook awake. I don't remember falling asleep but I guess I did. I yawn and sit up. Cato is cooking something over the fire. It smells like meat but I was certain that it all got blown up with the rest of our supplies.

"What are you cooking?"

"Meat. I found some in my bag. Just enough for two people too."

"Good thing it's just us then."

He smiles a little as he hands some. I smile back then start eating.

I finish in no time. I'm not even sure what type of meat it was but it was amazing. It tasted like something we ate in the Capital. Cato finishes the last of his and let's out a groan. He lays back and sighs.

"What's wrong?"

"I've just been thinking a lot."

"About what?"

"Our promise."

I'm not going to lie, I've been thinking about our promise a lot too. I even had a dream last night that he didn't keep it. He won and went home. He married another girl right away and forgot about me. I was watching his every move as a ghost. It broke my heart but I was glad to see him go home. Maybe he's going to tell me that the promise to off. Maybe he's going to break the team up. Maybe he'll kill me right here.

"Oh."

"Yeah, I understand if you don't want to keep it."

He thinks I want to break our promise? Why would I do that?

"I do want to keep it."

"Really?"

There's surprise in his voice. Did he really think I would break a promise like that?

"Yes."

He's quiet for a long time. I start to say something else then I hear his soft snores. I'm almost positive that no one would come out in this storm so I lay down and try to fall asleep.

*

I wake way before Cato. I decide not to eat until he's awake. Plus I can't cook. I lay back now and stare at the ceiling of the cornucopia.

The anthem starts playing a few hours later. I sit up in confusion. It can't be night already. Can't it?

"Ladies and gentlemen, there has been slight rule change. Two victors can be crowd if they're from the same district."

The anthem plays again then ends.

Cato and me could go home! We could win this!

"Clove?"

"Cato?"

"We could go home."

"I know."

I hear his footsteps as he nears me. He sit down beside me then wraps his arms around me. I lay my head on his shoulder and smile. I look up at him and he's already looking down at me. He smiles then kisses me. I'm shocked at first but then I kiss back.

He pulls away and says," I love you."

"I love you too."

He smiles really wide before saying,"We're going home, Clover."

I get butterflies at the silly nickname. It sounds so foreign to me now but I love it.

I smile twice as big back and say," I know!"
