Simple plans can actually help so much, this is not just some piece of useless advice.

Why should you make a simple plan of your book before you write? Because as you're writing it can help lower the risk of writer's block because you can have clear steps on what to write and it takes all the pressure off of you because you don't have to think on the spot as much. A simple plan can really give you a clear view on what you're writing meaning you can clear your head and focus on writing.

How do you make a simple plan?

I suggest you do this by hand if possible.

First you should start off with writing a list of your chosen characters, writing if they are main or not, what chapter they come in and what chapter they may go, write their age, a brief on what happens to them, their relations to the other characters (if any), how they die (if that happens) and a brief of what their role is in the plot.

My second step would be to write a brief of the beginning, middle and end of the book (include a brief of the epilogue/prologue if you are having one), then you can get a brief idea of what you're writing.

My third step would be to write mini mind-maps to make a more in-depth plan of your story, including the characters, the scenes, the plot ideas, deaths, births etc.

Finally, as I'm about to start writing up, I'd write a more in-depth plan to every single chapter that way if I get stuck, it's a lot easier to refer back to the plans, this takes the pressure off of the mind.

I hope this piece of advice has helped you!!

Good luck writing :-)
