Key for Ability Classification Codes (A.C.C).
[Sanders' side notes in square brackets]

MRC: Mesial Range Classification
1: Internal
2: External
3: Bimodal.

[Oldest method of classifying the Esoterics and Anomalies (beings that defy natural laws, the main objects of the Esoteric's activities. All Esoterics are technically Anomalies, but the term is mainly used for more malevolent beings). MRC only outlines where the power works; whether inside a body (MRC-1) or outside (MRC-2) or both.]

(E)NQ: (Ezra's) Nominative Qualification
A: Squib
B: Amp
C: Medium
D: Null
E: Witch
F: Elemental

[Created by Mather Ezra, in his thesis 'Defining the Paranormal' (1986). It's also crude system which tries to rank anomalies (as they were understood at the time) based on their general level of power. Basic descriptions:

Squib: alters general laws of nature and physics, but mainly involving itself, e.g. phasing through walls or shifting appearances.

Amp (Amplifier): increases the power of another being (like a Medium or Elemental) in the area.

Medium: taps into the universal connecting threads (what Jonathan called 'Nexes') and can use these nexes to seek out or manipulate distant entities.

Null: like Amp but with the opposite effect. Ezra ranked them higher because they can render one vulnerable to other attacks.

Witch: their abilities cover an area of influence (a 'Sphere'). Knowing the extent of a witch's sphere can help to plan and avoid attacks. Some say Witches are merely Squibs with Spheres that go beyond their own bodies, but this is debatable, as there are some Witches who cannot exert their abilities on themselves.

Elemental: ranked highest because they create and control a multitude of natural forces. Some authorities consider Elementals to be the superior forms of Witches, but this is equally debatable.

This system of classification is currently being discontinued in favour of the APT (see below). but may be seen in older documents.]

APT: Array Procedural Typing
I: Exone
Subtypes:
(S): Substance
(E): Entropy
(C): Continuity.

II: Symbiote
Subtypes:
(An): Annex
(Ac): Accel
(At): Attenuant

[APT is the most recent classification system, considered a revision/fusion of the two older systems but with emphasis on the mechanism of the abilities. Power level (as was the aim of the ENQ) is now qualified by the Mot Scale (see below).

Exone abilities are projected into the physical realm, like the 'External' class of the MRC. Current research proves that all Exone abilities work within a sphere, altering the substance, stability and/or continuity in the environment. E.g. A being with telekinesis would be APT-I(C), since moving an object from its state of rest is a change in continuity. A being capable of replication (increasing substance) is described as APT-I(S), and so on.

A symbiote relies on/influences another being’s ability or an ongoing phenomenon, usually through Nex connections. This category covers the (E)NQ's "Amps" (Accel), "Null" (Attenuant) and "Mediums" (Annex), but is not limited to Ezra's classic views of Anomalies. Some symbiotes (Annexes) can also feed off external energies to boost their other powers.

Important note: These broad classifications are far more simplistic than real life cases. Most anomalies come in multiple combinations of these.]

Mot Scale: ranked I – VI (See Test Facility for updates on measurement)
I: Low
II: Low-Mid
III: Mid
IV: Mid-High
V: High
VI: Extreme
U: Unrecorded.

[The Mot Scale (named after Anomaly researcher Eric Dermot) is a power ranking given to the abilities listed in the APT. The true measure is made through exertion tests in their research labs, but arbitrary measures are also used where testing is difficult (particularly for the symbiotes). Mot I is an area of effect within 500 metres (for exones) or a low-level ability alteration (for symbiotes). Mot VI has a sphere of over 5km for exones (largest recorded to date). For symbiotes, the ranking is based on the ability to significantly alter the abilities of an exone on the same level. That is: a level IV symbiote can only affect an exone that is IV or lower. The limits of these ranks are constantly redefined as ranges of ability are being seen to increase.]

SAMPLE ILLUSTRATIONS
Classical file description sample
:
MRC-1 NQ-B/APT-II(Ac) Mot III:

Explanation: MRC-1 refers to an Anomaly which acts on the internal field. NQ-B and APT-II both mean that the ability increases the powers of others (the being is an Amp/Accel). Mot III indicates an average degree of the power (matching an exone of level III).

Modern file description sample:
MRC-3 APT-I(S) Mot IV; II(An) Mot II.

MRC-3 refers to an Anomaly with bimodal range of ability, which include Substance modification (APT-I(S)) at a mid-high level/range (Mot IV). The being in this example is also capable of linking to another being's powers and/or Nex connections (APT-II(An)) at a low-mid level (Mot II).

A semicolon ‘;’ separates the APT values for Anomalies which have more than one recognized ability.

[Note: While recent files avoid the NQ classification entirely, the MRC is still being used as it gives a fair idea of the threat of an Anomaly. MRC-3 is never a good sign.]

Employees are encouraged to familiarize themselves with these classifications in order to ease clerical and field processes.
