"It's been a long time since I last talked to someone who didn't want to arrest me," James chuckled half-heartedly as he turned his head to look at you, "There's something about you..."

You looked down at your lap where the old scrapbook was situated, smiling involuntarily, "I don't think I'd be able to arrest you even if I wanted to

You looked down at your lap where the old scrapbook was situated, smiling involuntarily, "I don't think I'd be able to arrest you even if I wanted to." This prompted James to laugh.

"For some strange reason, I trust you," James admitted, grabbing the book from your lap and placing it on the floor beside him, "I haven't been able to trust anyone in seventy years."

"You can trust that I'll always be here if you need me," you flashed him a small grin. For a moment, James looked down at your lips, prompting you to shift uncomfortably on the floor. You weren't used to people signalling that they wanted to kiss you, especially not people who were technically strangers.

"I don't doubt that," James only managed a half-hearted smile. What was he thinking? Why would a girl with a heart like yours want to be involved with someone like him?

You wanted to be with him, but were afraid you were jumping into things. When James left, you regretted everything you didn't do; kiss him.

Now, you walked around your lonely apartment, hoping that when you looked through the keyhole on your door, you'd see the familiar face of one James Buchanan Barnes. Of course, there was no way he was coming back, he said he wanted to keep you safe, and the only way he thought he could do that was by leaving forever.

No, that only made it worse.

Giving up hope, you found yourself sprawled on the couch with your cat, slowly forgetting about everything and falling asleep.

You awoke when the sun had fallen below the horizon, signalling that the day was over, but you didn't move from your position on the couch.

Suddenly, you heard footsteps crunching the gravel on your footpath, so you got up and walked to the door, waiting for the doorbell to ring. You were still half asleep, keeping your eyes closed when you turned on the lights.

When the doorbell rang, you slowly opened the door, rubbing your tired eyes. Before you could say anything, you were picked up in a tight, warm bear hug, and when you opened your eyes, they met with two familiar blue orbs staring directly at you.

"J-James?" You said, dumbfound, "What are you doing here?"

"I couldn't stop thinking about you," the man you had been waiting for admitted.

"Neither could I."

"Really?" A grin began to curl James' lips as he spoke, "I wanted to kiss you that day, but when you didn't respond to my signals I thought maybe you didn't think of me the same way. I know it sounds crazy, but I think I'm falling in love with you, (Y/N)."

The way James said your name sent a chill down your spine, and you knew there was only one thing you could do.

"I-I'm sorry-" you cut James off before he could finish by pressing your lips to his, your hands migrating to his hair as he cupped your face gently. Moments later, you were the first to pull away, taking a few deep breaths before James began to speak.

"I can't leave without you again," he breathed, walking inside your house as you closed the door behind you.

"So, you're going to stay?" You smiled, looking up at James.

"No. Knowing HYDRA, they've probably already found me. We need to leave."

"Where?"

"Come with me, to Romania."

"Romania? I-I don't know anything about the place, I don't even know the language."

"I'm fluent in over five languages, including Romanian," James smiled, his eyes still glued to yours, "Please."

You looked back at your surroundings, contemplating whether you should go.

Sighing, you shot James a positive smile, "When do we leave?"

"If it suits you, tomorrow."

You nodded, grabbing your suitcase to pack your belongings and a pet carrier to take your cat in.

"Are you going to help me or what?" You chuckled, noticing James was staring at you with a love struck look in his blue eyes.

"Sorry!" He apologised, snapping out of the trance.

"Thank you," James said, planting a kiss to your forehead.

"Don't forget the book," you smiled, grabbing James' flesh hand and giving it a squeeze.
