Chapter XV - Damaged

[Phil&Lucas Apartment, Central London, 11:47 pm, M 31/10/16]

DAN: (knocks on door, when phil opens, shyly) "Trick or treat?"

PHIL: (confused, smiles anyway, talking quietly) "You're not wearing a costume."

DAN: "The shops are closed. I didn't know I'd be coming here."

PHIL: (lets him in, closes the door behind him) "Why did you?"

DAN: "I was bored. Were you going to sleep?"

PHIL: "Yeah. You know I start work early."

DAN: "Oh sorry." (guilty) "Should I leave? We can just talk tomorrow."

PHIL: "Nah, it's ok. But I am tired so, bedroom?"

DAN: (confused, follow phil as he walks through the flat to his bedroom and gets in bed) "Uh..."

PHIL: (holds up end of the duvet) "You coming?"

DAN: (hesitantly, gets under the duvet) "How is it cold already?"

PHIL: "It's almost November."

DAN: (frowns) "Yeah."

PHIL: (rests his head on dan's chest, intertwines their legs) "That should be a bit better? You know, body heat and stuff."

DAN: (laughs) "You're so full of shit."

PHIL: "Ok, so maybe I just want to cuddle."

DAN: "And I thought you actually cared about me being cold."

PHIL: (smirks) "I'm killing two birds with one stone."

DAN: "Yeah, yeah. What were you doing before I came?"

PHIL: "Bedtime reading."

DAN: "What do you read?"

PHIL: "Usually horror, but I decided to reread a classic tonight."

DAN: "Which one?"

PHIL: "To Kill a Mockingbird."

DAN: "I read that in school once."

PHIL: "I never realised just how important the theme of social hierarchy is to the plot. Harper Lee uses the children's perspective to critique the social divisions and makes them look so irrational and destructive. It's genius."

DAN: (joking) "I love it when you talk literary analysis."

PHIL: "The symbolism of the mockingbird? Could be representing Tom Robinson because he is seen by the children as innocent and defenseless."

DAN: (laughs) "I'm so turned on."

PHIL: (cheekily) "I know, I can feel it."

DAN: "Oh my God." (bursts out laughing) "I've turned you into a devil."

PHIL: (clamps his hand over dan's mouth) "Luke is sleeping, you idiot." (removes his hand, and the both break into quiet fits of laughter) "Shhh."

DAN: (after their laughter dies down, more serious) "Phil, can we play a game?"

PHIL: "Well, I guess that is our thing now."
