Epilogue.
Annie's POV.
I lay back in my chair, enjoying the feel of the sun caressing my face.
After I lost my ability, I was safe, free.
I didn't have to worry anymore, not about getting found out, anyway.
The only thing I did miss about being able to breathe underwater was the fish.
The lovely, beautiful fish.
For that precise reason, I got a job at the local aquarium.
Luke got a good job- don't ask what, as it's too complicated for me to explain!!!
I lost my ability 10 years ago, and I don't regret it.
I turn my face to watch Luke, who is sitting on the chair next to me.
He jerks his face slightly, signalling something.
I follow his gaze, and see our daughter, attempting to steer her tricycle.
I laugh.
My beautiful daughter.
I gave birth to her just under 3 years ago, and she's amazing, sweet and funny and smart.
I close my eyes again, settling back down.
A few minutes later, there's a faint splash, and I hear Luke's shocked gasp.
I open my eyes to see him jump out of his chair, heading towards our pool.
I get up as well, but I'm confused.
I hear his shouts, and then I realise our daughter isn't there.
I freeze. That splash was Katie, falling into the pool.
I run to the edge of the pool, screaming, to where Luke had dived in, trying to find her, save her.
I see a faint splodge, at the bottom of the pool.
Katie.
I jump in, reaching for her, but then I stop.
Because she isn't choking.
Her arms are moving around, and she's making small bubbles with her mouth.
On her neck, very faintly, I can see markings.
Gills.
I gasp.
She can breathe.

And that, is the end of Gills.
