Kara is still perched on the rock, her eyebrows raised, and her face hard.
I gulp, struggling for words.
"Well?" She demands, when I don't speak.
"Um, Kara, I..." I look around, looking for an explanation.
"You what, Annie?! Breathe underwater?"
This is bad. "No! I don't! I don't breathe underwater. Why would you think that?" Okay, I know, stupid answer. But what else do you expect me to say?
"Err, maybe because you went underwater, and didn't come up for ages?" Seeing my expression, she rolls her eyes. "I wasn't spying on you, Annie. I like you, so I thought that we could spend some time together."
"Okay. But I wasn't breathing underwater. I promise."
Kara looks frustrated. "So how did you do it, then?!"
"Um..." I look around for inspiration, and my gaze falls on my arm, where Luke's snorkels are still wrapped tightly. I quickly untangle it, and hold it up. "This."
Kara looks suspicious. "I don't believe you."
"Ask Luke!"
"Fine. I will."
And with that, she turns, marching away, leaving me to scramble out of the water and follow.
