Chapter 5

*Leggo!*

It was just another typical day at recess. Me slagging around an abandoned stick. Except today I finally, finally, had the comfort of knowing who the mysterious man was. I just now realized that it would be so much easier to call this "guy" or "man" something else. So I decided to call him Adam. Cleary his name was probably not Adam, but it was a simple name and much better then "man."

So I guess today was really not a similiar recess to all the other. One, because I knew Adam wasn't a creeper. And two, he was much closer today. His old musky green car was almost right up to the fence. I guess he was just getting a closer view.

"You. Come here." A voice called. I spun around abruptly. Adam. He had gotten out of his car and was walking towards the fence that divided us. His body was in shape. I mean, he wasn't fat. His face seemed hardened, though. As if he had been up for countless nights worrying about something. He had a scruffy looking beard. It wasn't really a beard at all. Just long, uneven, stubble. I could still not see his eyes, due to the shades that hid them.

"Me?" I stood adjacent to the metal fence, but not to close. He was now directly up against it. His fingers curled in between the wires. I backed up slightly.

"Hello. What is your name?" He asked.

"Crystal."

"Well, Crystal. I actually have a gift for you."

"Really? What?"

"You will have to come around the fence and I will let you see it. It's in my car." I was now about 99% sure that this man was trying a sly trick on me. Like I said, I have seen those crime shows. When kids get taken. This is a common tactic.

"Maybe tomorrow. I have to go. Goodbye!" I started running inside to the school. I am certainly not stupid. Now I realize this man has been watching and waiting for the right child to try and abduct. But oh no. Not me. He has chosen me for a target.

"Hey." I called to Connor. I saw him in the hallway the next day.

"Oh, hi." He looked awkwardly downward. "Look I really have to..."

"I wanted to apologize for not believing you the other day. When you said that Adam, I mean that guy, was very suspicious." I knew this was the right thing. Because Connor was totally right, and I was completely wrong. Even if this guy was a parishioner or a not, he was still not safe to be around.

"Y-yeah. It's o-o-okay. I just was t-trying to protect you." I smiled and gave him a firm pat on the shoulder. I didn't want to hug him because that would be awkward.

"Well, b-bye." Connor said.

"How was school?" My mom said when I arrived home. She was cleaning the kitchen thoroughly. My dad was finally home for once, too. Yes, yes I do have a father. He is only home at certain unknown times though. He is the sheriff. So with a big head honcho job like that, your hours are not workable. Even for your family.

"Interesting." I didn't care about how awful school was right now. I just wanted to spend as much time with my dad as I could. Who knew when he was going back out for work again. It could be in a matter of two minutes for all the information we receive.

"Hi, pumpkin!" I ran into his arms like old times. Now that he was home we could just mess around and play games. I didn't have to worry about serious things like what went on at school. I could just focus on how to beat my dad at Jenga.

*tanks!*
