"Hurry up, Marlow!"

I rushed down the hall with the shovels in hand. I stopped in front of Mr. Richmond, panting slightly.

"Forgive me...master."

He sighed and said, "If I had known you'd be so slow, I would've called in another servant for the day."

I quietly followed him outside of the mansion, watching as he stared down at the map in his hands. He grinned happily and began heading into the woods. I followed behind him with the shovels in my arms.

I momentarily felt for the knife strapped to my thigh, smiling when I made sure it was there. Now some people might think, "why go through all this trouble to kill someone?".

I admit, for the longest time I was thinking of poisoning his tea last night instead of just drugging him. But then his murder would put me in danger of being caught.

No. Instead, I carefully thought out my plan for the best outcome. I waited patiently for every piece to fall into place. Plus, I want to be able to see the look on his face when I end his life with my own two hands.

We walked a good distance into the woods before finally stopping. Mr. Richmond looked from the map to the surrounding area.

"I think this is it. Let's start digging."

Before he could turn around toward me. I quickly took one of the shovels and swung it, hitting him in the back of the head with a loud thunk. He landed face first on the ground before flipping himself over to look up at me.

"M-Marlow, what are you d-doing?"

His voice was quiet and weak sounding as he gazed up at me, fear evident in his eyes while blood began dripping down the back of his head. A grin spread across my lips as I watched him.

"I've waited a long time for this moment," I said with a chuckle. "After all these years of abuse, I can finally pay you back for everything you did to me."

"Marlow, I'm s-sorry."

I frowned and pressed my foot against his chest. "Oh, NOW you're sorry. You're only saying that to save your skin. You have no idea how I feel, do you? My burning hatred for you was the only thing keeping me going all this time. And now it's time to get rid of you once and for all."

I dropped the shovels and crouched down, grabbing the knife under my skirt and holding it against his neck. I grinned down at him, watching his eyes widen more and more.

"And by the way, master, X doesn't mark where the treasure is, it marks your grave."

I slid the knife across his throat, watching blood pour out of the gash. He gurgled and choked on the blood pooling in his mouth before finally dying.

I stood up, grabbed a shovel, and got to work on digging. After making a hole big enough, I grabbed Mr. Richmond's arm and drug him into the hole. I started shoveling the dirt back on top of the body until it was completely buried.

I smoothed out the top soil before finally dropping the shovel. I stared down at the blood covered ground for a moment, the realization hitting me.

"I'm...free. Finally! After all these long years! I'm finally free!"

I laughed until a sudden pain was sent through me. I looked down to see long, white spikes sticking out of my chest. My eyes were wide at the sight. In an instant, the spikes slid out, causing blood to start pouring out of the holes in my body.

"N-No. This can't...be happening. Not after...all this."

I clenched my teeth. The pain was unbearable, but I pushed past it in order to turn around. I want to see the face of my attacker. I froze upon seeing them.

It was a pale, humanoid creature with long claws coated in my blood. The creature watched me with large, white eyes while licking the blood from its claws.

"W-What the hell...some kind of monster? Doesn't matter...I won't let you take my freedom away..."

In that moment, I could no longer stand the pain and fell back onto the ground. My eyes drooped as I fought to stay awake.

"You...you'll pay for this...you'll see...I won't let it end this way."

My voice grew weaker and weaker as blood now trickled from my mouth. For some odd reason, the creature standing over me seemed to flinch away from me. It let out a hiss before disappearing from my field of vision.

Tch, is it afraid now? Damn, this sucks. I worked so hard for this day. Is it really going to end like this? Killed by some freaking monster next to the grave of my former master?

My eyes seemed to close on their own and I was instantly cast into darkness. All sounds ceased as everything grew quiet and empty around me. I suddenly saw a figure coming toward me. It was my master.

"Hmph, now look at the mess you've gotten us into. You just had to go and kill me, huh, Marlow? I always knew you were a weak minded fool."

His image disappeared to be replaced by another. My mother. She crossed her arms and frowned at me.

"You're useless. I was hoping you'd make something of yourself while working for Mr. Richmond. How pathetic that you'd turn out like this. I'm ashamed to call you my daughter."

My anger steadily rose as her image faded away. I then saw...myself. When I was younger. I also saw the other kids who used to pick on me in school.

"Look at this freak. I hear she lives with some rich guy."

"Do you think she has money on her?"

"Nah, she's just a little servant girl. Probably a little whore too."

"What a waste. She shouldn't even be alive if that's all she's going to do with her life."

The other kids disappeared, leaving my younger self alone. She slowly stood up, wiping her tears away as she looked at me. She slowly grew until she looked like a mirror image of myself now.

"You remember, don't you, Marlow?" she said with a grin. "All the abuse you've endured throughout the years. Not one person has cared about your life, so why should you care for anyone else's?"

So many memories flooded my mind. She's right. I'm right. All my life I've practically been caring for myself. No one has ever given a damn about me. The other me started laughing.

"Such emotion. You're not really ready to give up are you? After you've worked so hard to get here?"

I slowly shook my head, clenching my fists while the other me grinned menacingly. "Good. Now use all that rage and hatred..."

She suddenly disappeared only to be replaced by the pale creature that attacked me.

"...and kill everything that stands in your way."

In that moment, my focus was on that monster. Without having to think, I launched myself at it, biting and clawing in a fit of rage. When I finally stopped, there was nothing but a bloody mess lying in front of me. My own laughter resonated around me.

"Excellent work. You're ready...Changeling."
