During the many years Grindlewald was dead and not Dumbledore, Grindlewald was repenting. Once Dumbledore had died, Grindlewald attempted to make it up to him but it took Ariana to tell her brother he was being a 'stupid idiot' to get Dumbledore to forgive Grindlewald. Neither of them forgave themselves.
