The next day, Kalen, Rafe, and myself had dressed in riding clothes, packed up, and set off on horseback to the Cascade Mountains. It would take seven days to cross the mountains into Eldoren.
When we reach the base of the mountain, we stop to rest the horses. Kalen leads the horses over to a nearby stream for a drink. Rafe and I seek out a log to sit on.
"This is where I leave you two," Rafe says with sadness in his voice. The sadness surprises me.
I whip around. "What do you mean, leave us? You aren't coming along? But Rafe you-"
He grabs my hand, instantly shutting me up. "I can't come with you, I want to so, so bad, Danica. But I can't, I just can't. I'm so sorry and I hope you understand, but I can't go with you."
Kalen returns with the horses. Rafe instantly mounts his stallion, turns a gives me a little smile and then he's off. Will I ever see him again?
I climb onto my dark horse and follow Kalen into the mountains. My heart is heavy, and I don't know why.
