Poem #71// River Banks

46 2 2

It was a small town.
Where everyone was friendly
And new the latest news.
They had the latest gossip
And the newest scoop.

She lived further out.
In the woods by the field
Where the animals danced.
There she found peace
And calmly accepted the world.

She found him at the river.
With a book in his hand,
He didn't even notice her.
He found her secret place
And he didn't want to leave.

She met him on a basis.
Three days a week
They shared themselves with another.
Familiarizing themselves
And gaining each other's trust.

He kept it a secret.
She didn't understand
What to do or what to say.
For every time they were at school,
He pushed her away.

She went to confront him.
Where the riverbanks were cold,
When the birds stopped their song.
Her words cut like a knife
And left him with a sting.

It was his turn to feel it.
To be ignored and castaway,
To know what is was like to feel gray.
The town knew there was a trouble,
But he didn't feel like sharing.

She regretted her choices.
Of being so cold and one-sided,
She now wanted him back in.
They met again on the third day
And sorted it all out.

Neither of them felt doubt.
Their friendship grew stronger
And their meeting times increased.
They were now inseparable,
Down together in the darkness, in the deep.

Everybody knew.
Word traveled like a forest fire,
Screaming their love to the wild.
For his name was now her name
And her name was now his.

Everybody loved them.
She was known for being him
While he was known for being her.
They were the crown of the town,
The ones that they adored.

But she was growing distant.
Not being able to save them,
Down into the deep they went.
Their loved died in the water
Where they first did meet.

It was too late for them.
Already crying on the river banks
They gave up too soon.
For know when they spoke her name,
They always used his too.

It wasn't the way she wanted it.
For everyone to remember
That she was known through him.
The town was her reminder
Of her biggest mistake.

It was the end of her world.
Losing the one she loved,
Haunted by him everywhere.
In the whispers of the people,
Not even in her mind could she escape him.

She went to the river banks.
To float with the memories
And sometimes to find peace.
But he came back, just as did she
Nothing was normal; it would never be.

They were now strangers.
They took their love as fools
And let everybody in.
For he was her reminder,
An action compared to sin.

She wouldn't forget.
They wouldn't allow it
In a place where memories never die.
She was left to play it cool,
To act okay and lie.

He was surrounded.
By new friends, new talk, new rules.
Everything felt different; they knew he was changed.
But he had to stay and play it safe,
To assure them he wasn't a fool.

He still came on their meetings days.
An old habit hard to break,
A horrible and known mistake.
They never spoke, they never looked,
For they were what they were before.

They were once again strangers,
Just sharing the river's shore.
No secrets shared, no glances exchanged,
They sat at opposite banks.
To avoid the empty feelings
And the always-worries stares.

It started at the river banks.
A love so pure and sweet.
But with the current, did it leave.
With an ending of defeat.
