Late Friday night, Lisa dragged Jennie down the hallway from the exam room, where she had just finished processing a stack of referrals for tests and scans for a forty-year-old construction worker who had come home from work and found he couldn't remember his name.

"I think we have a problem," Lisa said in a very quiet voice so she couldn't be heard in the neighboring exam rooms.

"What's the matter?"

"I have a twenty-five-year-old female student who has been experiencing abdominal pain, nausea, and low-grade fever for two days."

Jennie looked at Lisa questioningly, because these symptoms were too general and could mean almost anything. They had at least a dozen patients with abdominal pain every day.

"Is there anything unusual about that?"

Lisa nodded. "Her liver is just huge, very soft on palpation, and that's why I decided to examine it. Enzymes and bilirubin are elevated-she has hepatitis."

"Curse."

"That's not all." Lisa said concernedly," if you remember, a couple days ago I examined a guy with acute hepatitis A. "I asked the student where she'd been eating dinner for the past few weeks, and then called the first patient to see if they had anything in common."

"So there is?"

"Yes. A Chinese restaurant on East Ode." Lisa sighed. "It could be a coincidence, it's a pretty popular restaurant. But I think we should report it to the health department and maybe the epidemiology center."

"Agreed," Jennie replied, thinking about the coming administrative nightmare and deciding that she could handle it if she got on it as early as possible. "I'll call them right away. There's probably no danger, but if we've got an epidemic in the offing here, we'd better get in touch with the proper authorities as soon as possible."

"Yeah, that's what I thought too."

Jennie glanced at her watch. "Oh, shit. This could drag on for God knows how long, and Irene has a date tonight. She was going to make Minji dinner and leave as soon as I got home." She rubbed the bridge of her nose in puzzlement.

"We should call Jisoo and Rose, they can keep an eye on Minji..."

"My shift will be over soon. I can keep an eye on her."

Jennie smiled. "Lisa, you don't have to babysit. I'm grateful to you..."

"I want it," Lisa's voice was steady and firm, but there was tenderness glowing in her eyes, "Please."

"If you're sure," Jennie said, still hesitant. Minji loved spending time in Lisa's company, but it seemed unfair to Jennie to Lisa. She and Lisa were dating, but what she was offering" this simple sign of attention and involvement spoke of a much closer relationship. Dating. What they had between them now was fine. It doesn't necessarily need to grow into something more. But it looks like it already has.

Lisa watched carefully the inner struggle on Jennie's face, which she hoped would go unnoticed. It was as if Jennie was subconsciously resisting something that brought the two girls closer each time, intertwining their destinies more and more closely. Lisa understood why Jennie was resisting, but every time she saw it, every time she felt Jennie trying to keep distance between them, a wave of resentment rose up inside her. "Jennie, for God's sake, when are you going to let me get even a little closer to you?"
