Rosé collapsed next to Jennie in one of the nurses' station chairs and sighed heavily. "God, what a day."

"Have you seen Lisa?"

Rosé smiled. By her count, this was the tenth time Jennie had asked that question since the three of them had arrived at work eight hours ago. Rosé doubted Jennie realized how agitated and unbearably grumpy she became whenever Lisa disappeared from view. "I think she's shamanizing over the fractured navicular bone in Exam Room Seven. An artist who fell down the stairs and landed on his hands."

"Oh, right."

"It's a good damn thing Lisa's back at work today." Rosé looked around the emergency room with a fleeting glance. "Half the patients here have surgical problems."

"She's totally earning her paycheck, that's for sure." Turning in her chair, Jennie glanced at the wide board, with a list of incoming patients, their admission times, discharge times, and chief complaints. The flow of patients was actually going faster, and part of the reason for that was that of the people with surgical problems, only a small fraction were waiting to be seen because Lisa was dealing with those issues herself. "I just want her to burn out on the job."

"I don't think you need to worry about that," snorted Rosé, "She's incredibly quick to straighten things out, and I wouldn't say she looks tired."

"I think you're right" Jennie tried to say it as casually as possible, but Roe knew her too well.

"What's troubling you?" Rosé looked into the shadows dancing in the depths of Jennie's eyes and asked quietly. "Are you worried about her health?"

"No, of course not."

"Yes, you are worried. Why? Is she having some kind of heart problem?" Seeing Jennie's jaw clench, Rosé added impatiently. "I already know what's wrong with her, remember? You're not going to reveal any secrets."

Jennie's shoulders slumped slightly. "I don't know what's bothering me. From the looks of it, there's nothing wrong with her. I've seen her running around the field with the ball, with the kids, and believe me, she's fully functional."

"You wouldn't be half so worried if you weren't in love with her."

"I'm not in love with her." Jennie stood up and gathered her papers. "I'm going to go discharge the man in the first with chest pain. His EKG is normal and his chest x-ray showed nothing. He's got esophageal spasm, we'll need to do an endoscopy. Can you give him the phone number of the gastroenterology department so he can make an appointment for an exam?"

"Of course." Rosé hurriedly stood up and blocked the exit. In a loud whisper she said. "I also saw the way you were looking at each other this morning. I thought I was going to have to hose you down with cold water before I got in the car."

Jennie couldn't help but smile. "She's beautiful, isn't she?"

"She really is beautiful." Rosé gave Jennie a quick and gentle hug. "And so are you. I'm so happy for you."

"There's not much to be excited about yet. We're just going on a casual date."

"A date!"

"Shh! Geez, could you keep it down?" Jennie looked around suspiciously, relieved to see that no one was around. "I hate it when there's gossip going around the hospital, and I especially wouldn't want it to be gossip about me."

"When?"

"Friday."

"Who invited who?" Rosé could barely contain her excitement. She was naturally curious and liked to find out details about other people's lives, and this event was without a doubt Rosé's most exciting. Jennie's going out on a date!
