As I stood in the hospital room, watching my newborn child for the first time, a bunch of emotions came over me. I had waited for nine long months to see you, my baby, and now here you are! I felt curious, nervous, and excited all at once, wondering what kind of journey we were about to embark on together.

I couldn't wait to hold you for the first time, but the nurse had to wash you up first. When I looked at your mother, I could see tears streaming down her face. She seemed as if she might pass out! She turned her head towards me and gave me a weak smile, but I looked away and stared down at the floor. This will all be a part of my testimony that I will one day share with you! But for now, all that matters is the journey I'm starting with you. The moment you came out of the womb and started crying was the moment I knew that becoming a father started right then and there.

The nurse approached us with you wrapped up in her arms and asked if the mother wanted to hold you. She nodded weakly, and the nurse placed you in her arms. I could see the joy in her eyes as she held you for the first time.

The nurse then walked over to me with the birth certificate and asked, "Are you the dad?"

"Yeah!" I responded.

"Will you please sign here?" she asked.

I shook my head, no, and she said, "Well, considering you're the father, you have to"

"-You're just a nurse, and according to the law, I don't have to sign anything!" I interrupted. "You can't force me to sign it if I don't want to."

The nurse nodded her head and said, "You're right. I'm sorry, sir!"

"Can I hold the baby, please?" I asked.

Your mom stopped cuddling you and looked at me. I got up from the chair and reached out for you, and she placed you in my arms. I held you close, and you were cradled with your eyes closed. You had no idea what was going on or where you were. But, you've just stepped into a world of challenges, the same world that I'm going to raise you in. The same world that will treat you both poorly and well. But you'll be alright. You're going to have two active parents in your life who will teach you everything you need to know and prepare you.

I felt a bond forming between us when your tiny hand reached out and grabbed my finger, and I knew that we were connected in a way that could never be broken. I held you close and rocked you gently, feeling tears welling up in my eyes. Then, I began to slowly walk around as you gripped my finger tightly. I didn't let go because I knew that this was a way for us to build a bond. For you to get a sense of who I was and what I felt like. I may not provide the same skin contact that mothers give their babies, but I want a bond where, when you touch me, look at me, or even hear me from a mile away, you sense Daddy's presence.

I want you to get used to me because I want to get close to you. I never had this kind of relationship with my dad, but I always wanted a different connection with my kids. But right now, this isn't about me. These tears are shedding because Daddy is just so happy to see you!

"Sir, the mother should get started on breastfeeding now!" the nurse said.

Damn it, just when we were getting close! I turned around to look at the nurse and your mom. Then, I walked to the bed and handed you over to her. It was at that moment you released my finger and began to cry once again! My eyes widened as I realized you were building an attachment to me. It melted my heart. Your mother and the nurse may never understand the time I just had with you, but it's a feeling I'll never forget. It's one we will always share, even if you don't remember this moment, which of course you won't! After that, I wanted to cry even more. This could be a good sign that our journey will be a bright one, or will it?
