Chapter 17: FROM GOWNS TO GUNS

As I entered Aisha's cafe, the inviting aroma of freshly brewed coffee and freshly baked treats filled my nose. I inhaled deeply, immediately feeling a wave of relaxation wash over me. It was the perfect place to pass the time before meeting Hazel, and naisip ko din na it would also be a good opportunity to pay a visit to Sydney.

Nagplano kami ni Hazel to go shopping for gowns today since her birthday was approaching. With the limited time available, it just made sense to explore ready-to-wear options. And what better place to spend an extra hour than at Aisha's cafe, right?

"Hey Syd," I grinned as I approached the counter. Sydney's eyes widened in surprise when our gazes met. Siguradong hindi niya inaasahan na makikita niya ako ngayon dahil wala akong sinabi sa kanya.

"Well, well, well, look who it is! Good afternoon! What can I get for you today?" Sydney responded, with a beaming smile that illuminated her entire face.

Returning her smile, I replied, "I'll have a cappuccino, please, and a slice of your renowned chocolate cake."

"Coming right up," Sydney replied, her fingers swiftly dancing across the computer keyboard to enter the order. While gesturing towards an empty chairs, she continued, "It's in the house. Pili ka na lang ng upuan dyan, sunod ako mamaya."

I found a cozy corner table near the window, bathed in soft sunlight that streamed through the glass. The cafe was already lively, with customers coming in and out, and enjoying the cozy surroundings and the delightful aromas.

Nakakataba ng pusong makita ang Aisha's cafe sa ganitong estado at patuloy na umuunlad. I couldn't help but reflect on how close it was to shutting down due to financial losses, yet now it stood as a testament to success. They had managed to turn things around and even hired additional staff to meet the growing demand.

I settled into the comfortable seat, taking a moment to appreciate the view outside. As I waited, I took out my phone and sent a quick message to Hazel, letting her know that I will wait for her at Aisha's cafe, and then scroll aimlessly through my phone.

My attention was diverted when I noticed that a steaming cup of cappuccino and a delectable slice of chocolate cake on a delicate porcelain plate was now being served. I was about to thank the server for her service when I realized that it was Nichol, Aisha's sister, who was serving me.

"Hello, Nichol. I didn't know you were working here," I remarked, acknowledging her. "Kamusta ka?"

I hadn't been aware that she had taken up a job here while studying. Aisha must not have mentioned it to us, or perhaps she isn't aware herself. Because knowing Aisha, hindi niya hahayaang makaranas ng kahit anong paghihirap ang mga kapatid niya, lalo na kung alam niyang kaya niyang sulosyunan ito. Aisha was always been fiercely protective of her siblings, and always putting their well-being above everything else.

Nichol's smile seemed a little awkward. "I hope this doesn't reach my sister."

Well, looks like my question had just been answered.

I pouted playfully, pretending to ponder the situation. Sydney must be aware of Nichol's presence, right? After all, she's in charge of the cafe.

Taking a sip of her cappauchino, I replied, "So, how's school going?"

Mukhang nakahinga naman ng maluwag si Nichol. She let out a small laugh, "It's going well, thanks. Keeping me busy, but I'm managing. Ikaw ba?"

"Just catching up with Syd," I replied, stealing a glance at Sydney working diligently behind the counter. "Although, to be honest, I'm mostly here to pass the time before I meet up with another friend. We're on a mission to find the perfect gown her upcoming birthday celebration."
