Previously on DIL...

I was so mad right now. She was trying to get to me and it was working. I was so done with this.

"That'll be all my questioning." She finally sat down and I wasted no time standing and going to my seat. Obviously I wasn't going at the speed I intended to because of my bump.

"You did good." My lawyer told me. I just nodded my head and picked my mirror up.

I dug in my purse for a cotton bud. I used it to dab the corner of my eyes before actual tears came out.

* * *

I'd zoned out for a while, so I completely missed Nasir's first half of his questioning.

"You took Onika under your care when she was 14, correct?" Mr Keenan started. "Don't lie under oath, Mr Jones."

"Yes I did. No one else was there for her, so I cared for her."

"How old were you at the time?"

"It was such a long time ago, honestly." Nasir tried to joke but nothing was funny, at all.

"It's ok, I have the information right here." My lawyer flipped a page on his notepad. "You were 21."

"If you say so."

"No, Mr Jones. These are the facts." Mr Keenan flipped to a photo of Nasir and I, so it could be displayed on the tv screen. Everyone in the court could see it. "This is actually you guys when she was 15."

Nasir wasn't in the best position because evidence was pointing to him not being a great person.

"A 7 year age gap, Mr Jones. Maybe if you guys were in your 50s it'd be fine. However, she was in her second year of teenagehood whilst you were the legal age of drinking." My lawyer placed his documents down. "Correct me if I'm wrong."

"She didn't look her age, even that young. She could've passed as 18."

I grimaced at his wording. Looking back, I shouldn't have even interacted with him. But I was too young to know better. Also, if I hadn't, then my beautiful daughter would've never been born.

"That is very predatory." My lawyer remarked. "Ignoring the age of a young girl all because she looked older than she was. How would you like it if a grown man said the same thing about the daughter you're fighting so hard to take?"

"I wouldn't appreciate that. No one should talk to my baby girl if they're objectifying her."

Again, I found myself disgusted by his words of choice. Like, 'baby girl'. The same words he referred to me as when we first met.

"Your baby girl? You didn't seem to care about your baby girl until a few months ago when you decided you wanted custody of her."

"She is still my daughter." Nasir tried to argue.

"Do you love her?"

"Of course I do."

"What's her favourite colour? What's her biggest fear? What's her biggest dream? What is her favourite breakfast? What calms her down before doing a dance routine in front of a large crowd?"
