#32 * Athena X Amphitrite

"What do we have here?" A voice behind them laughed.

Amphitrite barely had the time to comprehend what happened. In an attempt to protect their modesty Athena whipped up, her clothing reappearing in an instant, as she threw a knife at the intruder to distract them from the two goddesses. The sea goddess noticed her lover had made her cloak, Aegis, appear over her body. The impenetrable cloak glistened with golden thread weaved through the currently deep blue color of the fabric.

"What, you really think this will stop me?" A deep male voice mocked the wisdom goddess.

"It didn't need to." She replied ever so quickly.

"Is there something we can help you with lord Poseidon?" Amphitrite asked.

The god of the seas focussed his eyes from Athena to the goddess behind her. His eyes glinted with an evil light. He seemed to scan every inch of what he could see, possibly even imagining what Aegis hid. He ignored the question and turned to his niece again.

"I didn't know you could love."

The words were blunt, rude and sharp. They were meant to taunt and hurt. The oceanid didn't need to see her lover's face to know it would hurt her. Even if she could have seen Athena's face she knew it would only be a split second before she forced it back into an unreadable expression. If you didn't know the goddess very well you wouldn't even see it.

"I mean, you never show any kind of affection towards your family. You never bring anyone home, yet here you are with the first sea nymph you could find." Poseidon gestured vaguely in Amphitrite's direction.

"Maybe she deserves my affection, unlike the likes of you and your siblings." Athena bit back.

Amphitrite knew very well the wisdom goddess had her own ways of showing she cared for her family. She showed her love in a private manner because it simply wasn't meant for anyone else. The oceanid knew she went hunting with Artemis, raced Hermes for fun and did science experiments with Apollo. If Poseidon didn't know about any of this, she cared very little for him and what he did. Athena's jab wiped the smirk from his face. Like any god he didn't like to be denied things, even if he didn't have them in the first place.

After the speech, the gods flared out into the ballroom. They all stood in groups, talking with nymphs and satyrs, catching up with those they hadn't seen in a while. Amphitrite saw Athena standing with Artemis and Hestia. The three of them seemed engaged in a more laid back conversation. Next to her Poseidon was boasting to some minor sea deities. She doubted he would miss her anytime soon seeing as everything was about him and his power over the sea. Almost as if he was trying to one up Zeus and his speech. The oceanid had to keep herself from gagging, his ego making her sick. Deciding they wouldn't care if she went away for a moment Amphitrite slipped away. She could always say she went to get another drink. After taking a small detour around the room to not raise any suspicion she walked up to the three maiden goddesses. Well, two and Athena. As she was approaching she saw Artemis slap her older sister's arm to get her attention and pointed in her direction. The wisdom goddess directed her steel gray gaze towards the goddess of the sea. Her eyes rolled all over Amphitrite's body, making her slightly blush.

"Amphitrite, what a surprise." Hestia was the first to speak.

"A surprise indeed." Athena mused.

Artemis seemed to be the only skeptical one.

"A deity of the sea walks up to you and that's what you have to say?" She looked up at her older sister in confusion.

"I thought you hated the sea."
